1. Committee approved of Minutes #3, September 26, 2019.

2. Committee approved request from the Department of English to make the following changes to

catalog copy:

Creative Writing, B.A., Specialization in Fiction

Requirements for the liberal arts major in creative writing, B.A. specialization in fiction

The creative writing major with a specialization in fiction requires a total of 44 credit hours, including five creative writing workshops (20 credits), two cognate courses (8 credits), and either four English electives or three English electives and an additional creative writing workshop (16 credits). One of the creative writing workshops must be a 4000-level course; this class will provide a capstone experience and require a creative thesis. Students are encouraged to take at least three of their five required workshop classes before taking the capstone.

Students must earn at least a B- in each creative writing workshop course and at least a C in each literature course to have it count toward the major. Students who don’t earn a B- in a creative writing workshop course must re-take that course to earn at least a B- before proceeding on to the next course in the sequence. Only one 1000-level course will be accepted for credit in the major.

5. Sixteen elective credits

• 8 of these elective credits must be taken at the 3000 level and cannot include CW courses workshops.

• 12 of these elective credits must be from the following group: CIN 2100, CIN 2320, all ENG courses.

• Students may use the remaining 4 elective credits to take: another CW course, or another ENG course.

• CIN ENG 2100 can replace one of these 3000-level electives.

6. At least twenty credits in English courses must be taken at Oakland.

7. An introductory two-semester sequence in a foreign language, or one semester of a foreign language at the 1150 level or higher with a minimum grade of C.

Note

Should there be changes made to catalog listings of requirements for the creative writing degree in future years, students have the option of using any new course approved to satisfy their degree requirements, regardless of the catalog copy in current usage when they started their program.

Students majoring in creative writing may not use the ENG rubric to satisfy the College of Arts and Sciences exploratory requirement. Students using this catalog to meet creative writing major requirements may also use any course subsequently approved as satisfying requirements under the various workshop and cognate elective course options that is published in a later catalog.

Creative Writing, B.A., Specialization in Literary Nonfiction

Requirements for the liberal arts major in creative writing, B.A., specialization in literary nonfiction

Students must earn at least a B- in each creative writing workshop course and at least a C in each literature course to have it count toward the major. Students who don’t earn a B- in a creative writing workshop course must re-take that course to earn at least a B- before proceeding on to the next course in the sequence. Only one 1000-level course will be accepted for credit in the major. The 44 credits (exclusive of composition courses used to satisfy the university writing proficiency requirement) are distributed as follows:

Only one 1000-level course will be accepted for credit in the major.

General introduction to modern/contemporary literature, which can include works written from the early twentieth century to the present, with some attention to literary form and to the way in which literature reflects culture

ENG 1800 World Literature (4)

A survey acquainting the student with some of the great literature of the world. General introduction to literature from around the world.

The development of literary theory, presented as a survey. Applications of theory in critical practice will be considered. Literary theories in critical practice.

4. Committee approved the request from the Department of English to change the description for the following courses:

ENG 3510 Selected Ethnic Literature (4)

Reading and critical analysis of representative selections from American ethnic literature. Special attention to groupings such as American-Jewish and Native American at discretion of instructor. Satisfies the university general education requirement in U.S. diversity.

5. Committee approved the request from the Department of English to end date the following course:

ENG 3685 Cultural Studies (4)

6. Committee approved the request from the Department of Music to add the following courses that are equivalents to existing courses but relevant to General Education:

MUE 3000 University Chorus for Gen Ed Arts (1)

Performance of a wide range of the large-group choral repertoire. No audition required. This section of University Chorus is for students who want to apply the course toward the General Education Arts requirement. It must be repeated for a total of 3 credits. Credits may be combined with MUE 3003.

MUE 3003 Oakland Chorale for Gen Ed Arts (1)

Performance of a wide range of choral chamber repertoire from Renaissance to the present. Prerequisite(s): permission of instructor. This course is for students who want to apply it to the Gen Ed arts requirement. It must be repeated for a total of 3 credits and may be combined with MUE 3000.

MUE 3018 Chamber Orchestra for Gen Ed Art (1)

Performance of chamber orchestra repertoire. Membership by audition.

Prerequisite(s): permission of instructor. This course is for students who want to apply the credit toward the Gen Ed Arts requirement. The course must be repeated for a total of 3 semesters.

MUE 3028 Symphonic Band for Gen Ed Art (1)

A non-auditioned instrumental ensemble designed to offer performance opportunities for non-majors. This course is for students who want to apply it toward the GenEd Arts requirement. It must be repeated for a total of 3 credits. Credits may be combined with MUE3029.

MUE 3030 Wind Symphony for Gen Ed Art (1)

An ensemble of wind instruments performing standard concert band literature.

Prerequisite(s): permission of instructor. This course is for students to want to apply the credit toward the GenEd Art requirement. It must be repeated for a total of 3 semesters. Credits may be combined with MUE3028.
