Thematic AnalysisMichael HornsbyOGL 482 Pro Seminar IIDr. KirschApril 10, 2017Arizona State UniversityIntroductionDeveloping life themes by analyzing self-assessment data required me to perform both rigorous and honest self-analysis. I began this process by re-reading my self-assessments and assignment instructions to extract pertinent information on conducting qualitative thematic self-analysis research. I reprinted all my self-assessments so that I could lay them out and organize them. I used sticky notes to write down the tentative themes, contradictory information, and overlapping data I identified. My intent was to analyze each data source to aid me in my qualitative analysis. I re-read previous assignments and discussion boards mining them for any relevant details and “a-ha” moments. I compiled my data sources in the chart below. I dug as deep as I could into each data source to find as much useful information as possible. After I cultivated each data source for initial themes, I reviewed my notes for further reflecting. In the next step of my process, I began sorting the information into groupings. I practiced interpretation by following a process of inductive reasoning as described by the text. After careful deliberation and modification, I constructed my themes. I coded each theme 1-10. I then reviewed each contradiction, assigned the number of the theme, and a “C” code for all contradictions I found with its affiliated assessment. This made it easier for me to match the contradiction with the artifact. I created a chart to visual aid me to guide me. After identifying my themes, I created a page for each theme within my document. This allowed me to format each theme with sections for supporting evidence and contradictory evidence. I developed ten themes to analyze. My themes are: 1.It is important for me to freedom to choose my own career path2.I have a passion for technology and innovation3.I am an adventurer and open to experiences4.I am a dutiful son and father which is important to my identity5.Leadership roles are important to me6.Years of developing social networking skills is paying off7.My self-esteem is rooted in my academic achievement8.I viewed financial gain as a priority because I seek financial stability9.My reputation is important to me10.Being self-reliant is paramount for meCompiling, gathering, and sorting data proved to be an exhausting and time-consuming task. Revelations were made through the process as I analyzed each self-assessment. I worked from the data to develop a theory and to reach a conclusion based on what was observed. It’s my belief that this qualitative analysis has enriched my understanding of self and introduced me to a process of reflection, analysis, life themes, and their implications.
