district serves more than 22,000 students in 25 schools while
employing over 3,000 individuals, many of whom live right
here in our community.
As we applaud 85 years of success, the district is moving forward with a vision of transformation, which is evident with the opening of the Career and Technical Education Early College High School. This program will allow students to earn a high school diploma and an associate's degree or industry certification simultaneously. There is one motivation that drives us to pursue such new and innovative avenues ? OUR STUDENTS. Each employee of GPISD, from teachers and coaches to custodians and student nutrition workers, is here to ensure an outstanding educational experience for every one of our GPISD students. Every member of our team is committed to our mission, which is to prepare students to become productive citizens and lifelong learners.
I would like to thank the parents and community for your continued support of the students, staff, and administration of this great district. As we begin a new journey this school year, we will march forward as a team to embrace learning for every child. Our staff is excited to begin, and we look forward to another successful and productive school year for everyone!
Sincerely,
Band students prepare for the upcoming marching season during summer practice.

students by developing their potential for leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. The organization's long-standing motto is "Learning to do, Doing to learn, Earning to live, Living to serve." The FFA educational program model is three fold: classroom instruction, supervised agricultural experiences and the FFA. Classroom agricultural education is applied to hands-on learning opportunities called supervised agricultural experiences (SAEs). SAEs include activities such as starting a business, working for an established company or working in production agriculture. The FFA provides members the opportunity for leadership experience and competitions, scholarships and personal opportunities for involvement.

Character education
Although it is important students receive a good education in academics, it is equally essential that character education be addressed as well. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education." True education is what students in Galena Park ISD receive.
Each month a character trait is presented to the students of GPISD. The school faculty exemplifies the monthly trait while teachers integrate character education into lessons as often as possible. Students focus on the monthly trait in their school, and, hopefully, home life. The character traits our students and faculty will focus on this year are:
August/September Citizenship October Compassion & Tolerance
November Fairness December Honesty & Integrity
January Perseverance February Responsibility
March Respect April Self-Discipline
May/June Trustworthiness

Information
at your
fingertips
Skyward Mobile Access for smartphones or tablets enables parents to stay up-to-date regarding their child's academic progress. Conveniently using their smart device, parents can view student attendance, grades, and discipline records. In addition, parents can easily update their child's health and emergency contact information from home or anywhere they have mobile access. The Skyward Mobile Access app is free
from the iTunes App Store, Google Play and the Amazon Appstore, and can be used on a variety of mobile devices. For login information contact your child's school.
Do I need to fill out an application for each child? No. One application covers all children in a household; however, you must reapply each year.
My child's application was approved last year. Do I need to fill out another one? Yes. Your child's previous application is only valid for that school year and for the first few days of this school year. You must send in a new application unless the Student Nutrition Services Dept. has indicated to you that your child is eligible for the new school year.
May I apply if someone in my household is not a U.S. citizen? You or your child do not have to be a U.S. citizen to qualify for your child to receive free or reduced-price meals.
What are the prices for breakfast and lunch? Breakfast is free to all students. Elementary lunch is $1.45 and secondary lunch is $1.65. Reduced-price lunch is $0.25.
Is there a difference in the way a regular price, reduced-price, or free meal is purchased? There is no difference. All students pay for the meal the same way, by typing in their student meal account number.
How do I register? You can register confidentially online at , or in person at the Galena Park ISD Administration Building located at 14705 Woodforest Blvd., Houston, TX 77015, or at your child's campus.
Note: It takes approximately 10 days to process an application. Students must pay for their meals until the application has been approved. Applying early is the best way to ensure free or reduced-price meals on the first day of school.

Galena Park ISD offers students the opportunity to earn an industry certification while in high school, which, in turn, can reap many benefits for students and potential employers or universities. Pursuing and achieving an industry certification allows a high school student to acquire and practice skills needed for college and career-readiness. Along with gaining mastery of the most up-to-date skills in a chosen career path, a certification also signals prospective employers and colleges that a student is dedicated and worth an investment of time and resources.
In the 2014-15 school year, GPISD students earned 940 industry certifications such as: Certified Pharmacy Technician, Cosmetology, Medical Coding, Microsoft Office Specialist, NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research), Adobe Certified Associate and Certified Veterinary Assistant. These students have proven they are committed to learning and improving. They are sending a message that they are prepared for success in their future endeavors, whatever they may be.
Focus on SAFETY
As a new school year begins, many students will ride
the bus for the first time. With everyone
adjusting to new schedules, it is important to:
?? ARRIVE at the bus stop five minutes early ?? REMIND your child to be aware of their
surroundings and report anything suspicious to the bus driver ?? COMMUNICATE - Encourage your child to tell you if they have an after school activity or if they are going home with a friend
All GPISD buses are equipped with video camer-
as and GPS monitoring to enhance the safety of your child. For information regarding bus schedules go to and click on "Bus Routes-Daily" under the Quick Links section, or contact your child's campus. As we safely transport our students more than one-million miles each year, their safety and security is always our top priority!
Note: Please be patient as buses may be slightly delayed during the first week.
