Choir Handbook

2019-2020

Welcome to the Junior High West Choral program. Our goal is to develop and blend young voices as well as expose them to music from as many different genres as possible. Students will also learn music fundamentals, tone production and how to develop their ability to read the language of music.

The minimum involvement for students occurs by attending each class. Opportunities exist within the course of the year for students to participate in various individual and group competitions.

We continue the tradition of excellence in our singing and in our personal commitment to giving 100% in all that we do. We look forward to sharing our musical growth with you in performances this year.

The information found in this booklet will give you an overview of what students and parents can expect as a member of the choir. Any additional information will be sent out to you promptly. The choir website will have up to date information and forms as well. Email is the fastest and easiest way to communicate information so please submit an email address on the enclosed form.

Parent volunteers are always welcome and needed for activities. Feel free to call me at PJHW at 281-421-1222 if you have any questions. My conference time is 2:56 – 3:50 p.m.

Eligibility Requirements

Due to PISD policy and UIL regulations, students must maintain passing (a 70% or higher) grades on report cards in all classes in order to participate in ALL extra-curricular activities sponsored or sanctioned by the school district. Once a student loses eligibility, they must wait seven calendar days after a three week evaluation period and / or grading period, whichever comes first, in which the student has made a grade of 70% or above in all classes. Events affected by this rule would include:

• Any choir performance associated with an award

• Any contest, competition or field trip off campus

Students may also lose the privilege of participating in choir-related activities including concerts, parties, rehearsals, contests and trips due to poor behavior. (Examples: Office referrals, ISS, Suspension, Expulsion).

Please be aware that eligibility will affect whether or not a student may participate in an event, even if you have paid for the event! Refunds cannot be given for ineligible students or conflicts after a student has paid.

GRADING

Weekly Rehearsal Etiquette Grade: Students are expected to SING & POSITIVELY PARTICIPATE in classroom activities and to have the required materials. Failure to have required materials, not participating in class activities and off task behavior will lower weekly rehearsal grades.

Warmups or Weekly Written Skill Builder Grade: Students are expected to complete a daily written Skill Builder (warm-up) upon entering classroom. Students who turn in Skill Builders each Friday will receive a grade of 100.

Concert Performance Grade: Concert performances are the result of class work and time. They are considered a MAJOR TEST. Dates and times are given at the beginning of the year in order to avoid scheduling conflicts. Keep the attached choir calendar handy!

Concert Performances for all choirs are an end result of class work and fulfill the performance requirements of the Choir TEKS; thus they are required as major test grades.

Concert Attire

• School concerts: West Choir T-Shirt

• Region Concert, Pre UIL Concert and UIL Contest - Formal Concert Attire is required. Dresses and Ties are owned by the school and will be issued to girls and boys participating in these events. Replacement fees will be charged for dresses and ties not returned in good condition.

o Girls - Will need to provide black shoes to wear with the dress

o Boys- Will need to provide a black long sleeved dress shirt, black dress pants and black shoes.
