For level one sign language, there are no prerequisites required to take this course. Course Description:? American Sign Language is a set of courses that will satisfy the two year foreign language requirement for graduation. Deaf Culture and History are integrated into the instruction of the basics of ASL grammar and syntax, vocabulary, fingerspelling, numbers and visual-manual communication. Projects, presentations, skill-building activities, technology and games, as well as interactive communication, will be used to enhance and enrich developing expressive and receptive skills in the target language. Students must use their hands to communicate daily.Textbook: Master ASL by Jason E. Zinza (online in Google Classroom) Required Materials: Pen/pencil, folder with brads or thin notebook, headphones/earbuds (for use with the Chromebook)Optional Materials: markers, colored pencils, glue, laptop or ipadCourse Assignments: Daily Participation Activity, Weekly Quiz, ASL Connection Journal, Master ASL Vocabulary Units #1-5, Projects, Technology for the Deaf, Video Assignments, CHROMEBOOK Assignments, GOOGLE DRIVE Folder, Famous Deaf Person Poster & Project, Receptive & Expressive Practice Sentences, signing without voiceCourse Testing:? Tests will be administered to monitor the progress of receptive and expressive signing skills. These’] will include: teacher-signed vocabulary, numbers and fingerspelling, written questions and student-signed material. Any material presented in class will be subject to testing. Written tests and/or computer access tests will be administered as well. Grading:? Major grades will be worth 60% of the grade and minor/daily grades will be 40%. Other than tests and quizzes, students will also be graded on signing sentences, short stories, vocabulary reception and expression, daily warm ups, journals, signing activity in class, and other material given. Student and parent access to grades is available in SKYWARD FAMILY ACCESS.*?Make up work: Students are responsible for completing missing assignments and should meet with the teacher to determine when a test/quiz can be given, if missed. Tests and some assignments are signed, not written. Special arrangements must be made to make up the work. Students will not be allowed to go back and retake an assignment once grades have been posted unless prior arrangements have been made with the teacher. Assignments are posted on the board each week.*?Attendance/Tardy: Each student is required to be in class by the time the tardy bell rings. *?Late work/ submission of assignments: If there is an absence, the assignment is due the 2nd class period after the student returns. A zero will be placed in the gradebook until the assignment is turned in. Students that do not complete or turn in work after 2 days will be assigned Lunch Detention. Failure to complete work in Lunch Detention will result in After School/Morning School Detention . All work must be completed.*?Extra credit: Additional assignments may be completed for extra credit, at the teacher’s discretion.
