Closet Organizer

Closet Organizer

Does an avalanche of clothes and sports equipment pour down upon you every time you open your closet door? You're not alone, a messy closet can be found in most any home. It's too easy to put things away behind a closed door, out of sight and out of mind. Problems arise when you need to find that certain sweater or shirt, and then you have wade through the clutter to find it. The solution: a closet organizer!

Out of the closet

An organized closet will do more than store your items, it will settle your mind knowing that there's a place for everything, and everything's in its place. Many manufacturers market closet organizing systems that can be customized to fit your particular storage needs. An average closet organizing system will include these components:

• Hanger Rods -- Metal rods allow hangers to slide easily, but they can bend if overloaded. You should allow space beneath the hanger rods for long dresses and gowns. Men's shirts hang down less and allow for shelving or storage boxes beneath them. Hanger rods are often adjustable to match various configurations of your organizer system.

• Sliding Drawers -- These are perfect for socks, underwear, foldable shirts. If the closet is used for linens and towels, you'll be amazed how much more you can store with a basket & drawer system.

• Hooks -- Plastic or metal "S" hooks are great for hanging purses, umbrellas, robes, and so on.

• Shelves -- Boxes that store clothing and purses can be stacked on shelves, instead of on the floor.

• Shoe Racks -- Shoe storage systems can be hanging bags with many pockets, or low shelves that keep shoes organized and off the floor.

• Zippered Compartments -- A zippered transparent plastic cover can segregate certain items and keep them dust-free.

• Other Accessories -- The sky's the limit with today's modular expandable closet organizers. Some of the optional accessories include laundry hampers, pant racks, jewelry/accessory drawers, and belt and tie racks.

• Lighting -- The closet may not be lit, or well lit. Wireless, battery-powered lights are very practical for closets where the light won't be on very long. These lights are self-contained units that can be stuck anywhere needed with Velcro or a more permanent adhesive.

Material issue

Pre-packaged closet organizing systems come in a variety of compositions. White laminated fiberboard is very popular, as are plastic-coated metal or polished metal. Wire grid systems are lighter, but allow dust to sift through to the lower levels of the closet. Small systems may have casters on the feet so it can be wheeled into the room from the closet. Higher-end systems may have a stained wood finish and brass or other attractive hardware to match your room décor.

Clothes-ing the deal

Should you decide to sell your home, you'll have to show prospective buyers your closets. Does the prospect put you into a cold sweat? You may not have any skeletons in your closets (not real ones, anyway), but well-lit, well-organized closets look bigger and add value to your home. That's always a good thing, whether you're selling or not!
