I. Race

A. Race is a constructed identity

1. Biologically, we are all one race (human)

B. Def #1: Major biological, genetic differences between humans

1. Race can be determined by DNA

2. Traits that can be transmitted from parent to children

3. There are 3 basic races. All others are conglomerates.

a. Black

b. White

c. Asian

The assumption in this construct is that race can be determined by physical characteristics, such as skin color, hair, facial features, etc.

In actuality, the color and feature differences are simply variations in one race – human.

Variations may be a result of adaptation

Low latitudes have dark skin because of intense sun

Shorter light in high latitudes make lighter skin necessary to absorb sufficient vitamin D

C. Def #2: Race is a social construct

1. Definitions have been fluid across time

a. skin color is actually part of this construct, as there is NO way to connect skin color to biological definitions of race.

2. Racial identity is not a self-consciously constructed collection of characteristics, but a condition which is imposed by a set of external social and historical constraints.

3. DNA is largely mixed today

a. Joe Lee – “Canasian”

b. Tiger Woods calls himself Cablinasian (Caucasian, Black, American Indian, Asian)

c. Benjamin Carlos (Black, Japanese, Filipino)

d. Obama. He’s ½ and ½. Is he white or black?

4. Race and ethnicity is defined by multiple definitions:

a. your own definition of yourself

b. the way others see you

c. the way society treats you (legally)

i. Brazil sometimes defines siblings as different races!

II. Ethnicity

A. A GROUP THAT SHARES COMMON PHYSICAL, MENTAL TRAITS BECAUSE OF COMMON HEREDITARY AND CULTURAL TRADITIONS.

A. Joe Lee. He’s Asian but identifies with Canada as his culture.
