Standard: California History/Social Science Content Standard 10.5.1: Analyze the arguments for entering into war presented by leaders from all sides of the Great War and the role of political and economic rivalries, ethnic and ideological conflicts, domestic discontent and disorder, and propaganda and nationalism in mobilizing the civilian population in support of "total war."

Lesson # 1

Introduction: At the turn of the 20th century, nationalism, imperialism, militarism, and alliances set the stage for war. With the assassination of Archduke Franz-Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, the leaders of Europe found justification for entering into battle.

This lesson will help you identify the arguments used by European leaders to justify their nation's involvement in World War I.

Directions: Match the cause for war to each of the quotes by writing the number on the line in front of the quote.

1. Nationalism - A deep devotion to one's country - created competition.

2. Imperialism - Competition to establish colonies - deepened rivalries between nations.

3. Militarism -Arms race, creation of large standing armies - increased readiness for war.
