WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to the 38th Annual Meeting of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons in Baltimore. This is the site of Johns Hopkins which is considered by many to be the "father institution for gynecologic surgery". Howard Kelly, Cullen, Novak, Wharton, Everett, Woodruff, Howard and Georgeanna Jones, TeLinde, and numerous others from Hopkins have made great contributions to our specialty.

This year's scientific meeting has been moved to a Friday through Sunday format allowing for potentially fewer work days off. Program Director, Dr. John Gebhart, and his committee have assembled a stellar program.

On Thursday prior to the main meeting there will be a, "State of the Art", Postgraduate Course on "Advances in Minimally Invasive Endoscopic Surgery" directed by Dr. Peter Rosenblatt with presentations by Peter, Arnie Advincula, Ted Lee, and Carla Roberts who are all leaders in the field. The program not only includes laparoscopy and robotics but also complex hysteroscopy. Excellent surgeons, Keith Isaacson and Tony DiSciullo will be performing live telesurgery which will allow for interactive discussion from the audience. A hands-on workshop with surgical stimulators will also be included.

Additionally, on Thursday, the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons Systematic Review Group (SRG) will discuss its continuing work.

The Scientific Section beginning on Friday will include: ? A variety of peer reviewed oral and oral poster presentations which seem to

get better each year ? The Telinde Lecture by Dr. Frank Ling which will be a treat and very

meaningful.

ii

? Updates from Vivian Sung on the Systematic Review Group and from Dee Fenner on the status of the Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Subspecialty.

? Surgical tips and tricks ? An expanded number of "formal surgical video presentations" ? Three debates which will consider the following:

Open versus Endoscopic Myomectomy Surgical alternatives for recurrent pelvic organ prolapse, and Who should be performing surgical management of endometrial cancer. ? Stimulating interactive Roundtable Discussions on Saturday morning

Due to the high quality and quantity of video submissions this year, there will be additional videos available to be viewed in the SurgiView Video Room. Our society has partnered with SurgiView to allow for its members to have an opportunity to view SGS videos as well as numerous other well produced videos, at that their own leisure.

In addition to the SGS general session program, there are industry sponsored educational breakfast symposiums on Friday and Sunday mornings. It is hoped that the addition of these symposiums will provide attendees more opportunities for learning and interaction with colleagues. I would like to thank the various industries which have helped to sponsor the program and, thereby, increase our ability to better accomplish our mission.

Socially, we have planned a few "fun" activities for members and guests including the traditional Golf Scramble and a Fells Point Food Tour on Friday. A Saturday evening Gala Symposium is planned. I encourage you to explore the Inner Harbor activities available that promise to be a good time for all! I also suggest that you explore the Harbor East flourishing neighborhood by the hotel, featuring shopping, dining and entertainment

The Society of Gynecologic Surgeons continues to grow as more gynecologic surgeons recognize the important role that our society plays in education and research. We are a friendly group. While maintaining members who perform relativity large volumes of gynecologic surgery and/or are active in surgical education, we also realize the benefit of having, non-member, guests present at our scientific and postgraduate course meetings. Conversations and discussions which occur between meeting participants outside of the meeting room about various topics or specific patient management issues are very important to the society. We enjoy these very much.

If guests are interested in membership, the guidelines of how to apply can be found on the SGS webpage .

We want to meet you! Please introduce yourself to me and other members of the Executive Committee and Program Committee and enjoy the scholarly and surgical interactions which we have to offer.

Sincerely, R. Edward Varner, M.D., President SGS
