Leader Preparation

Lesson Guide

LEADER PREPARATION

BIBLE BASIS

What an exciting message today’s passage contains! Jesus stood before God, in heaven itself, pleading our case so that we might live forever with him. In his dying on the cross, and then overcoming death, Jesus paid the ultimate price so that we can be with him forever. Use this lesson to help children understand what Christ did for us and how through his ultimate sacrifice we have the hope of eternal life with him in heaven.

DISCOVERY POINT

God gives us hope through the promise of heaven.

BIBLE FOCUS

Hebrews 9:24-26; Revelation 7:16-17

KEY VERSE

“For the Lamb on the throne will be their Shepherd. He will lead them to springs of life-giving water. And God will wipe every tear from their eyes” (Revelation 7:17).

TEACHING PREP

The short overview below is designed to help you prepare for your lesson.

Supplies You’ll Need: Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player, box of tissues, garbage bags, “Message Directions” handout labels, “No More Tears” handout, tissue boxes, wrapping paper, tape, scissors, markers, and prepared index cards

Before This Lesson

• Print the “No More Tears” handout. You’ll need one copy per crew of four kids.

• Cut wrapping paper into the right-sized pieces to wrap the tissue boxes in the Bible Exploration Kits.

• List the following references on an index card for each Bible Crew, and place the cards in the Bibles for Bible Exploration Kits: Revelation 7:17; Hebrews 9:24-26; John 3:16; Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; 1John 4:9-10.

• Print enough “Message Directions” handouts and cut apart so that each child will have a label.

• Assemble Bible Exploration Kits (one per four kids): Bible, “No More Tears” handout, small garbage bag, one small box of tissues for each crew member, wrapping paper, tape, scissors, labels from “Message Directions” handout, markers, index card with verse references written on it placed in Bible.

• Hebrews 9:24-26; Revelation 7:16-17.

• Cue "Into the Bible" (Track 1) on the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD or (Quarter 7/Track 1) on the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD.

• Huddle briefly with your volunteers beforehand. Answer any questions they have. Encourage them and pray.

PARENT EMAIL

We’ve provided you with a “Family Devotion” handout to send the Bible learning and faith discovery home. When kids and parents have faith discussions regularly, kids’ faith multiplies.

So we’ve given you two options:

• Print the “Family Devotion” handout and make enough copies for each child to take one home.

• Email the “Family Devotion” to families before or after the actual lesson.

Or why not do both? That way you’ll double the opportunities for parents to actually get the handout.

2. Have children take a tissue from the tissue box. Tell them to hang on to their tissues until further instruction.

3. Help kids form Bible Crews of four, and give each crew a Bible Exploration Kit. Have the crews spread out around the room and sit on the floor in their crews in a circle.

SAY: OK, Bible Crews, everyone in your group should have a tissue. Lean your head back and place the tissue over your mouth. Count how many times you can blow the tissue up in the air before it falls to the ground. Give the kids a couple of minutes to blow their tissues.

SAY: For each time you were able to blow your tissue in the air, tell the others in your group one thing you’re looking forward to when you get to heaven. Take the garbage bag out of your Bible Exploration Kit and place the tissues in the bag as you share.

4. Give the crews about three minutes to share. Then start the “Digital Countdown” (Quarter 7/Countdown Track 2) on the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, and turn the volume way up. Lead the kids in counting along. Then SAY: I’m so glad you’re here today. We’re going to learn about the awesome hope we have because we get to live forever in heaven with Jesus.

5. ASK:

• What was the first thing that came to your mind when you thought about what was waiting for you in heaven?

• What’s the thing you’re most looking forward to?

6. After the kids have shared, SAY: Because of what Jesus did for us, we can look forward to going to heaven and living with God forever. There will be amazing things in heaven—things we can’t even begin to imagine. Throughout the Bible, God has promised us all kinds of things. Today we’re going to learn that God gives us hope through the promise of heaven.

LET’S EXPLORE!

Supplies: assembled Bible Exploration Kits, tissues and garbage bags from Welcome!, Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, CD player

1. Have the kids stay in their Bible Crews.

SAY: Today we’re going to talk about the hope we have of living with Jesus in heaven someday. Take the Bible out of your kit, find the card inside, and look up the verses. Take turns reading them out loud to your group.

2. After about four minutes, SAY: These verses explain to us the wonderful gift God gave us by allowing Jesus to die in our place for our sins. When you first came in, you shared things you’re looking forward to when you get to heaven.

ASK:

• What are some of the things these verses promise us?

• Which promise means the most to you and why?

SAY: Because of these promises, we can have hope that even though life can be hard sometimes, heaven will be a much better place where we will get to live with God forever. God gives us hope through the promise of heaven. One thing these verses promise us is that there will be no more tears when we get to heaven. Let’s think about what that might be like. Dump the tissues out of your garbage bag onto the floor into the center of your group. For every tissue on the floor, have your crew think of something sad that you’ll be glad is not in heaven. You have three minutes. Go!

3. After about three minutes, ASK:

• Explain why it was or wasn’t hard to think of sad things.

• What are things that make you more sad than others?

4. Play “Blow Your Nose” (Track 17) from the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD.

ASK:

• What did Olivia teach Ethan when she thought he was sad?

• Tell about a time God gave you hope even when you were sad.

SAY: Let’s make something that will remind us that there will be no more tears in heaven. Have Bible Crews take the “No More Tears” handout from their Bible Exploration Kits. Help kids follow the directions and wrap their tissue boxes. Have them write their names on their labels. Then encourage kids to tape their labels somewhere on their packages. When kids have finished wrapping their tissue boxes, ASK:

• How does it make you feel that no one will cry in heaven?

• How will knowing this help you when you’re sad?

5. SAY: Take your tissue box home, and place it somewhere you’ll see it often to remind you that God gives us hope through the promise of heaven.

LET’S PRAISE!

Supplies: box of tissues, Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player

1. Have the kids all grab a tissue for each hand. Then gather the kids together for praise time. SAY: Just thinking about all the fabulous things God has in store for us in heaven is enough to make us cheer out loud. Let’s wave our tissues like pompoms and say together “God gives us hope through the promise of heaven!” Lead the children in saying the Discovery Point together. Then SAY: Singing praises to God is another way of expressing our excitement at the hope we have. Let’s praise God together!

2. Set up the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD or the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD. PLAY:

• “My Help Comes From the Lord” (Psalm 121:2) (CD Track 5) (DVD Quarter 7/Track 5)

Sometimes I feel afraid;

I need someone to help me find my way,

Someone who holds me up

And gives me strength

To get me through the day.

My help comes from the Lord,

Who made heaven and earth.

You are all I’ll ever need.

My help comes from the Lord;

I’m trusting in your name.

You are my God;

It will always be true,

My help comes from you.

Sometimes I feel afraid;

I need someone to help me find my way,

Someone who holds me up

And gives me strength

To get me through the day.

My help comes from the Lord,

Who made heaven and earth.

You are all I’ll ever need.

My help comes from the Lord;

I’m trusting in your name.

You are my God;

It will always be true,

My help comes from the Lord,

Who made heaven and earth.

You are all I’ll ever need.

My help comes from the Lord;

I’m trusting in your name.

You are my God;

It will always be true,

My help comes from you,

My help comes from you.

He keeps his promises.

We know because

We can trust him.

Yeah, the Word of the Lord holds true.

I will never fail you

LET’S PRAY!

Supplies: tissues, garbage bags, Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, CD player

1. Have the kids get back into their Bible Crews. SAY: God gave us the most wonderful gift in letting his Son die for us. Because of Jesus, God gives us hope through the promise of heaven. Another of God’s promises is that there will be no more tears when we get to heaven.

In your prayer time, each of you take a tissue and thank God for one thing you’ll be able to leave behind when you get to heaven. Then, when the music starts, wad up your tissue into a ball as if to get rid of your sadness. Throw your wadded-up tissue in your garbage bag as you pray and thank God for taking this from you. After everyone has had a chance to throw away a tissue, close up your bag. I’ll know you’ve finished when I see your bag is closed.

2. Give kids about two minutes to share in their groups what they’ll be glad to leave behind. After this, start the instrumental version of “You Are My Friends” (John 15:14) (Track 15) from the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, telling the kids to begin their prayer time. Stop the music when all of the bags have been closed.

HIGH FIVES

Supplies: previously wrapped tissue boxes

As the kids leave, have them take their wrapped tissue boxes and wave them over their heads and say to a partner, “God gives us hope through the promise of heaven.” Then have kids give their partners a high five!

FOR-EXTRA-TIME ACTIVITIES

Lead the Sheep

Supplies: cotton balls, 8x11 blue paper

The cotton balls represent sheep. The blue paper represents water. One of the verses today tells us that Jesus will lead us to life-giving water. In their Bible Crews, have kids line the cotton balls up on the floor about two feet from the “water.” When you give the signal, have kids “lead” their sheep to the water by blowing the cotton balls onto the paper.

Heavenly Songs

Supplies: hymnals or songbooks

In their Bible Crews, have kids find as many songs as they can that have to do with heaven and what we can look forward to there. Have crews choose their favorite and perform it for the group.

Hiding It in Your Heart

Supplies: 8x5-inch pieces of paper, large newsprint paper, pens or pencils, markers, tape, scissors

Have each child cut out a tear shape from an 8x5-inch piece of paper and write his or her name on one side and copy the Key Verse on the other. For each Bible Crew, tape a large sheet of paper with a face drawn on it on one long wall. Have each crew tape their tears to the face drawing. Then encourage the crews to line up at the other end of the room. One person at a time, have kids race down and remove a tear, go back to the line, and have the next person in line run down until all the tears are gone.

Create a Bible Dictionary

Supplies: paper, markers, dictionary, CD player, Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD

Ask kids to create one or more pages, each with a new word, for a Bible dictionary. Have kids suggest words from today’s lesson—experience and anticipation are two suggestions. Have them write each word on a sheet of paper in fun letters, add a definition, list Scripture references, and make illustrations. Play “The Books of the Bible Song” (Track 8), from the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD while kids work. Add each page to a three-ring binder, and watch the dictionary grow!
