Young Fives Handbook

2018 - 2019

Mrs. Borges

Room 17

Welcome to Young Fives! This handbook includes important classroom information and procedures. Keep this handy because you can use it as a reference throughout the school year.

Beginning and Ending of School Day

Children will be allowed to enter the school building at 7:15am and will be held until the first bell rings at 7:50am. They will be held and supervised in the gym, lobby, or cafeteria. I will meet your children in their designated waiting spot inside of the building at 7:50am and walk them to their lockers. The children are supposed to be done at their lockers and in the classroom by 8:00am.

Half day Young Fives children will be dismissed at 11:45am in the back of the school from our outside classroom door. I will wait with the children on the sidewalk until you arrive. If the children are not picked up by 11:50am, I will take them to the office where they can wait until you arrive and come in to get them.

All day Young Fives children will continue their school day until 3:15pm. I will walk them to the front of the school where they can be picked up. We will find siblings outside!

Dismissal Time when there is a half-day of school

When the entire school has a half-day and is dismissed at 11:30am, all Young Fives children will be dismissed in the front of the school.

Uniforms

School uniforms must be worn on all normal school days. On days where there is a school liturgy, girls must wear their school jumper with a blouse, uniform socks, and shoes. On liturgy days, boys must wear white dress shirts and ties with their uniform pants, socks, and shoes. On Spirit days, children may wear jeans with Nouvel t-shirts or sweatshirts, and gym shoes, or their uniforms. On Pay to Wear Jeans days, students may wear anything they would like (

Morning Snack

Families will be responsible for providing their child’s daily snack. Healthy snacks are encouraged, such as fruit, vegetables, pretzels, goldfish, crackers, popcorn, fruit snacks, and yogurt. Water will be available to drink.

Lunch

All day Young Fives children will have lunch and recess with the Kindergarteners from 11:45am – 12:40pm. They will eat downstairs in the lunchroom and will have adult supervisors. Your children may choose to bring a cold lunch from home and a drink (no pop please), or they may buy milk for $0.60/day. Children who choose to have hot lunch will need $1.95/day or $9.75/week. Lunch money should be sent in an envelope with your child’s name and grade on it. Make checks out to Saginaw Township Community Schools. Each child will have an ID card which will be used at lunch to charge the correct account. You may send in any amount of money because it will be put on your child’s account and used when he/she purchases hot lunch or milk. You will be notified when your child’s account is running low.

Afternoon Rest

All day Young Fives children will have a 45 minute afternoon rest period. They may want to bring a small pillow and blanket to make this time more relaxing. These should be labeled with your child’s name and will be left at school in their locker. I will provide rest mats and soothing music. The children are not required to sleep, but must remain on their mats and quiet. Please do not send stuffed animals or toys. Rest things will be sent home once/month to be washed.

Physical Education Class

Young Fives children will have Physical Education class with Mr. Weigl. Gym shoes are the only special requirement. They do not need to be expensive, but must be labeled with your child’s name and left at school. They will only be worn during Physical Education class. If your child does not know how to tie shoes, you may want to start helping him/her learn or purchase a pair of Velcro shoes for gym. Girls may want to wear shorts under their uniform jumpers on gym days.

Extra Clothing

I highly encourage you to send an extra set of clothing (pants, shirt, underwear, socks) to school for your child in case of an accident (bathroom, milk or paint spill, wet slide). If he/she can change with minimal help, we will not have to call you for extra clothes. If you choose to send extra clothes, please put them in a zip-loc or plastic bag and write your child’s name on the outside. These extra clothes do not need to be uniform dress code. You can send old play clothes as an extra set.

Birthdays

Celebrating birthdays are a very important part of a young child’s life! We will celebrate each child’s birthday, or half-birthday in school by giving them a birthday hat, singing songs for them, and making them a special birthday book. You may send in a birthday treat like cookies, brownies, ice cream, donuts, jello, or rice krispie treats on or near your child’s birthday to share with the class. Please send a note a few days ahead so I can plan accordingly. If your child can not carry the treat by him/herself, it will need to be dropped off to Mrs. Sprague in the office and I will come get it. NO CUPCAKES WILL BE ALLOWED FROM MEIJER, KROGER, or SAMS CLUB! They have too much frosting that makes a mess and dyes the children’s faces and hands colors.

Field Trips

Young Fives children will be going on Field Trips throughout the year. There will be more information about each trip as the days for them approach. Notes and permission slips will be sent home in advance.

Class Parties

There will be several class parties for Young Fives children and their families. I will be working closely with the Young Fives Room Parent Representative to help him/her plan these activities. Families will be called upon to help with parties.

Book Orders

Book Orders will be sent home once a month. You are not required to order anything, however, these are a great way to build your child’s home library and encourage reading at home. If you choose to place an order, you can use your credit card to order online, or send a check made out to Scholastic Reading Club. When the books come in, they will be sent home with your child. If you have ordered something as a gift for your child, please let me know so that I do not send the books home with them. I will contact you to set up a pick-up time.

Homework

Activities will be sent home periodically that the children will need to complete and return to school. These activities will reinforce something we are learning in class. The children will need help from you to complete these activities, but they are meant to be a learning activity for the children so the families are not to do the work for the child.

Sharing

We will have show-and-tell starting in the middle of September. I will send home a note ahead of time informing you what day we will have show-and-tell. I will assign a new topic each week and your child will need to bring in something related to that topic to share with the class.

Supplies

There is a list of recommended school supplies on our school website. Your child will also need to purchase a folder for daily use and an art portfolio. The cost for those will be $5.25 and you may pay cash or write a check to Saginaw Area Catholic Schools. Please send in all school supplies and money by Tuesday, September 4.

Miscellaneous Information

Please send all cash and checks to school in an envelope with your child’s name, the teacher’s name, and what it is for.

Please put your child’s name on all of their clothing, including sweaters, sweatshirts, coats, boots, and backpacks.

If you need to bring something to school for your child, please leave it in the office with Mrs. Sprague. She will let me know about it and we will send someone down to get it.

If you need to pick your child up early from school, please send a note or call the office so that your child is ready when you come. In these circumstances, your child will need to be picked up in the office.

Mrs. Mattheis will be our aide every day ( She worked in our Traditional Preschool Room last year and worked in Young Fives a few years ago when I was on maternity leave. She is excited to be in Young Fives again! She has three children at NCCE!

Finally, if you have ANY questions throughout the year, please let me know! May God Bless us all as we begin an exciting new school year together!
