Mission Statement: The mission of the LWML North Dakota District is to equip and encourage all

women to share the compassion and hope of Jesus Christ.

Goals: Reflecting His joy, each woman of the LWML ND District will:

1. Study God’s Word for growth, guidance and confidence;

2. Actively demonstrate God’s love by using her God-given gifts to serve, lead, and mentor;

3. Willingly spread the love of Jesus throughout the world.

The Board of Directors of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League North Dakota District convened at 9 am with President Paulette Huber calling the meeting to order. Opening devotion was led by Jr. Counselor Pastor Adam Moline.

Opening remarks/agenda changes/additions: President Paulette Huber welcomed everyone. The following agenda changes were proposed under item #45: Discussion of mite goal for national; #46 Joyful Response; and #47 Gifts of Love. MSC to accept the agenda as amended.

Roll call: Present were: Paulette Huber, President; Nikki Tyrrell, VP of Mission Grants; Valerie Biberdorf, VP of Christian Life; LaurieAnn Totehagen, VP of Servant Resources; Delores Pavicic, VP of Communication; Myrna Baneck, Financial Secretary; Avonne Gessner, Treasurer; Pastor Tim Jenks, Sr. Counselor; Pastor Adam Moline, Jr. Counselor; Connie Smallarz, Bylaws Chairman; Nikki Rahlf, Historian; Karen Lougheed, Nominating Committee Chairman; Karen Puffe, Central Zone President; Shirley Hall, NW Zone President; Mary Lueck, SE Zone President; Marlene Boettger, NE Zone President; Dottie Sincebaugh, standing in for Parliamentarian; and Janet Baker, standing in for Eastern Zone President. Absent: Renee Johnson, Recording Secretary; Chantel Zeller, VP of Human Care; Darci Wolff, Newsletter Editor; Sue Corwin, Gifts and Bequests; Pam Thompson, SE Zone President; and Rhonda Hoge, Convention Manager. Guest: Elizabeth Moline.

President Paulette requested that the next Board of Director’s meeting include a Roll Call with the following statement: “The time is now for……..”

Minutes of the November 2014 Board of Director’s meeting were approved. MSC to approve minutes.

Credentials: Present were 14 voting members, 4 non-voting members, and 1 guest

Correspondence: A thank you was received from Rev. Thomas Zimmerman, CTS, Ft. Wayne for the contribution to their Food and Clothing Co-op.

ADDITIONAL REPORTS OF OFFICERS AND COUNSELORS:

Nominating Committee Chairman Karen Lougheed: She has met with the previous Nominating Committee Chairman and will be looking for people who would be interested in filling the following positions for the 2016 elections: President, Vice President of Human Care, Treasurer, Vice President of Mission Grants, Vice President of Communications, Jr. Pastoral Counselor, and Nominations Committee from each zone.

Central Zone President Karen Puffe: There will be a Spring Rally in Jamestown on April 18th with Orphan Grain Train ingathering and hands-on event. Also, working on Fall Rally with Rev. Matt Richard to speak regarding new church plants in the district.

Mission Grants Report and Recommendation: The committee recommends the following Mission Grants be paid when funds are available: #901 ND Churchworkers Scholarship - partial payment of $7000; #909 Christ the Way for $5000; and #922 Shepherd’s Hill Playground Equipment for $5000. The Motion Carried.

Committee Appointments: Dottie Sincebaugh has been appointed to the Bylaws Committee. MSC to approve this appointment. Motion: Valerie Biberdorf; second: Marlene Boettger.

2015 Fall Retreat Report: The 2015 retreat is scheduled for Sept 18-20 with the theme “Stepping out to a Life on the Edge” with Deb Burma as speaker. The theme verse will be “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13. There will be no helping hands session this year as Deb Burma will be having 3 sessions of presentations. Pastor Jenks will be in charge of the Bible Study. Registration opens June 1st. A flyer has been made and passed out to all Zone Presidents to make available to others.

It was MSC to invite the LWML South Dakota District to join us for our Fall Retreat this year. Motion: Karen Puffe; second: Dee Pavicic

Spring/Fall Rallies: Those hosting Rallies this Spring are: Central Zone, April 18th at Concordia, Jamestown, with ingathering and hands-on event for Orphan Grain Train; Eastern Zone, April 19th at Immanuel, Fargo, with panel from Human Trafficking event; Northwest Zone, April 18th at St. Paul’s, Minot, with a presentation relating to Alzheimers; Southwest Zone, April 11th with the Human Trafficking Event in Mandan.

Fall Rallies: Central Zone, no date set in Edgeley with Rev. Matt Richard speaking on new church plants in North Dakota District; Eastern Zone, Oct. 3rd at St. Andrews, W. Fargo; Northeast Zone, September at Our Savior, Cavalier; Northwest Zone, Oct. 24th at St Mark’s, Minot with Kay Kreklau speaking.

Spring Event(s): A “Witness, Mercy, Life Together Event” will be held April 11, 2015 at The Baymont Inn in Mandan. This will be sponsored by LWML-ND & LCMS-ND. The keynote speaker from Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services, Danya Underwood. This event will concentrate on how to detect and stop human trafficking. There is a $10 registration fee which will also covers meals. A free-will offering for Mites will be taken. The event runs from 10:30 – 3:00, and is open to men and women. There is an April 1st deadline for registration to help in meal planning. President Baneck will present a Bible study and Rebekah Marcis Grimm will also speak. The LWML store will be set up at this event. There will be a bus from Fargo to this event.

It was MSC to give $200 honorariums to each of the three people speaking at the Spring Event in Mandan. Motion: Nikki Tyrrell; second: Karen Lougheed.

LWML 2015 Convention – Des Moines, Iowa, June 25-28. The theme is “ Bountiful! Sow – Nourish – Reap” based on 2 Cor. 9:8. Goal: Through Christ’s bountiful love and blessings of Word and Sacraments, I am equipped by the Holy Spirit to work in my Father’s harvest field.

The bus now has 46 people signed up to ride at this time. The plan is to leave Bismarck early Wednesday morning, picking up other passengers in Jamestown and Fargo, and arriving in Des Moines that same evening, June 24th so people will be in Des Moines and ready for servant events, if they choose, Thursday morning. The bus will depart Des Moines after the final convention session on Sunday, June 28th, and return to ND that evening. Motel accomodations for those riding the bus will be at the Sheridan West at $144 a night plus 12% tax. There has been a request for booth help at the Friday night block party. The banner design was discussed with a few suggestions. There is enough in the delegate fund to cover expenses. Early registration deadline is March 14th. We have been asked to choose an Unsung Hero to participate in a procession at DesMoines. Dottie Sincebaugh was chosen for this honor.

The Board discussed issues regarding timeliness of the Messenger. Information is not getting out to the societies in a timely fashion. Everyone will be working to get the timing back on track.

ND District LWML Convention 2016 – Jamestown, Central Zone. Dates will be June 24-26, 2016, theme is “Rejoice in God’s Bounty”, from Jeremiah 31:12b-14. Convention mission speaker suggestions are needed. Kim Wagner’s name was brought up and Karen Puffe will check into how much she would charge to provide the Saturday evening entertainment.

Leader’s Manual: LaurieAnn Totenhagen has been working very hard on the Leader’s Manual. Many questions were asked to help fill in the blanks so this project can be completed very soon. Everyone thanked her for her hard work on this project.

The Board of Directors paused for lunch served by the LWML of Grace Lutheran Church, Carrington. Prayer before lunch by LaurieAnn Totenhagen. Prayer after lunch by Avonne Gessner.

Valerie Biberdorf asked that everyone looks to see if they have a box of songbooks that belong to the LWML sitting around in their home or at their church. The books that are used at Fall Retreat are missing. The have North Dakota LWML stamped on the front covers.

District Website: The LWMLND website contains a secure page for minutes, reports, roster, etc. Webmaster is Marie Johnson, and the access code is SeRv3Wgladness . Contact Marie Johnson if we see the need for updates on the website. Marie has also offered to help the Zones set up a web page. The updates on this could be done by Marie or someone else as desired.

LWML Year: The National LWML has asked the individual units to run from September 1 to August 31. The District Board has encouraged the ND units to make this change.

St. Peter’s, Sawyer Disbandment: A letter was received from St. Peter’s, Sawyer to disband their group due to lack of members. Paulette will send a letter to encourage them to still consider participation in LWML events even after they disband.

Mite Goal for National LWML: The Board discussed the issue that our National LWML is facing in regards to making the mite goal for this biennium and how we as a district could help. A motion was made by Myrna Baneck to give $5,000 out of the Gifts and Bequests Fund to send to National LWML for mites. Second by Janet Baker. Discussion was had. Motion failed.

Myrna Baneck then made a motion to give $10,000 out of Gifts and Bequests Fund to send to National LWML for mites. Second by Janet Baker. Motion approved.

An offering was also taken from the Board members for mites as well with $451.12 collected. Motion was made by Nikki Tyrrell to send this offering directly to national for mites. Second by Shirley Hall. Motion carried.

Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow was sung.

Joyful Response: It has been encouraged by our National LWML president, Kay Kreklau, that we consider to utilize the Joyful Response program that is in place for giving. The District would receive credit for mites that are given through the district’s site. Avonne will do some more investigating of this program before the next board meeting.

Gifts of Love: Dottie Sincebaugh requested that we consider this program and also her willingness to come to any type of meeting to present this program.

The LWML and LLL were honored at the ND District Convention in January.

Next Board of Directors Meeting will be November 7, 2015 at Grace Lutheran Church, Carrington.

On Friday evening and prior to the meeting being called to order on Saturday, a presentation was given by Kay Kreklau and Debbie Larson regarding “The Time Is Now.” Bible study was lead by Pastor Jenks and information was shared about LWML and the outcome of the survey done. Out of the discussions came “Big Ideas” for our board of directors to work on in the coming months:

1. Retreat like event with another district.

2. Invite personally – offer rides

3. Invite pastors in the North Dakota Disrict to participate in preparation of resource materials/events (invest in LWML)

4. Weekend retreat with women in your church

5. Make events safe and fulfilling

6. Build on convention/retreat speakers - use Bible studies, etc.
