To Kill A Mockingbird

Aunt Alexandra’s Tea Party, Wednesday March 18th

You are cordially invited to tea with Aunt Alexandra! Throughout this novel we only hear Scout’s voice. However, after the

traumatic experiences that our community has suffered in recent months, we feel that it is important that the community members come together to share their own points of view. After all, so many people have so many different sides of the story to tell. So, on this VERY rare (and unlikely to be repeated) occasion, we will dine and delight with ALL of the Maycomb citizens.

Preparation:

You have chosen a character to get to know especially well. You will BECOME this character in style, demeanor, dress, speech, ideas, and point of view.

1. Search through your book and place at least 5 post-its on pages that highlight different aspects of your character.

• On each post-it, write a couple of sentences explaining what this passage teaches you about this character. Include page numbers. These post-its must be handed in on the post-it sheet provided.

2. Write a diary entry (at least 200 words)

• Include: name, age, occupation, something about family or personal life, accomplishments or achievements, what you are known for, and how you feel about the trial. Think about how this character would speak. (Diction!)

• Explain how the trial has affected you personally, indirectly, directly, etc.

• What do you want to see happen in your town now? What message/lesson do you feel people have learned, if any? Do you predict changes or status quo? Explain.

3. Prepare a series of questions you would like to ask other characters in the novel. If you had a chance to talk one on one with these people, what would you like to know? You should come up with at least 10 questions to ask, and write them on a note card. Bring the note card(s) to the tea party.

4. Prepare a realistic costume. Consider physical appearance and mannerism. How would your character move around the classroom? What would your character wear? What props might your character bring along?

5. Prepare an authentic Southern dish or drink for this social hour.

TEA PARTY ETIQUETTE:

1. You should ONLY HAVE ONE-ON-ONE CONVERSATIONS!

2. When Aunty says “Mingle” you should shift to speak to another person at the tea. Your goal is to meet as many people as possible.

3. You must ALWAYS stay in character.

4. Keep in mind basic Southern rules of politeness; even mortal ENEMIES wouldn’t make a big scene at the Finch home.

You will be graded on:

1. The post-its 2. The diary entry

2. 10 questions 4. Costume

5. Southern dish 6. ESPECIALLY Tea Party Etiquette
