Moon Playdough

Create a model of the moon and any other planets you would like! Make sure to ask an adult for help with this activity.

1 cup of flour 2 tsp of cream of tartar (not completely necessary, but will make the dough last longer and softer) ? cup of salt 1 tbsp cooking oil, like olive oil or vegetable oil 1 cup of water Food coloring (optional)

Moon Crater Pictures/Locations from Swinburne University: Before you start, make sure to ask for an adult's help ? this activity can be a little messy, and you will need to use the stove!

Mix dry ingredients. In a large bowl, combine all dry ingredients together and mix well (flour, cream of tartar, salt).

Add wet ingredients to a large pot. If using food coloring, mix with your water first and then add to a large pot along with the cooking oil.

Reflection/discussion questions

Add dry ingredients to pot. Mix well.

Cook. Over low to medium heat, mix until dough starts to form. Make sure you do this step with an adult!

Remove dough from heat. Once the dough starts to form into a ball shape, remove from heat and let cool.

Knead. Once dough is cool, knead for a few minutes to make soft. If the dough still feels dry, add a little bit more oil until desired texture.

Have fun! Create "craters" in the moon's surface using your fingers or roll the dough on different textures to see how the surface is affected. This is what happens when things hit the moon in space!

Use the website above to see what the craters actually look like on the moon's surface.

What do you think causes these craters?

Why are some bigger than others?

*You can also do this activity with rocks and sticks or chalk on your driveway for a non-edible version.

Stargazing Map for Spring + Constellations:

Examples/Activity Source from KC Edventures with Kids:

First, spend some time outside when it's dark out and try to pick out any constellations using a map from the website. If you can't find any, pick out some stars that are brighter than others, and just be observant!

Reflection/discussion questions

Either print out or draw the constellation you want to recreate. Each marshmallow (or small/soft candy of your choice) will represent a star in the constellation, and the toothpicks will be used to connect them. You may need to break the toothpicks in order to connect the marshmallows.

Enjoy some as a treat afterwards!

Practice observation and recording what you see. Do this a few nights a week to see if anything changes!
