IPT Spanish Oral Tests

Two methods for deriving the norms are presented. The methods differ by their accuracy. The first method is the more accurate, but it requires a longer test administration procedure. The second method is less accurate due to an assumption that must be made to derive the norms. It is important to use the same method of norm-referenced score derivation for all scores that are intended to be compared to each other (for example, student-to-student comparisons, or year-to-year comparison of the same student's performance).

Method 1: Administering the test starting at the beginning

The published norms in the IPT Spanish Oral technical manuals reflect this method, which was employed during field testing of the IPT Spanish Oral tests. As a result, this method produces the most accurate norm-referenced scores for each student. Test administration is always started with item #1, and the stopping rules are applied during testing. The number of correct responses is tallied at the end of testing. See Tables 1?11 in this document for the norm derivation tables.

Method 2: Administering a potentially shortened test

This method makes use of Ballard & Tighe's recommended starting levels for students who are known to have basic Spanish skills. The recommended starting levels may allow the test to be started at a later point than item #1 based on earlier test performance. This method requires an assumption to be made about the student's performance on the items at the beginning of the test that were skipped. Specifically, it requires the assumption that the student would have had correct answers for all of the skipped items. The student's raw score, for the purpose of deriving norm-referenced scores, would then be equal to the number of items in any test levels skipped at the beginning of the test plus the number of correctly answered items in the level(s) that were actually administered. Because of this assumption, this method produces less accurate scores than Method 1, and it is very important that scores using Method 2 not be compared to scores using Method 1. However, if Method 2 is applied consistently to all score records, Tables 1?11 in this document may be used to derive normreferenced scores for the IPT Spanish Oral Tests.

Norm-referenced score derivation tables for the IPT Spanish Oral Tests

Tables 1?11 provide the scaled scores, percentiles, and normal curve equivalent (NCE) scores yielded by the IPT Spanish Oral Tests using Method 1 or Method 2. Tables 1?3 cover the Spanish Pre-IPT, Tables 4?9 cover the IPT I?Spanish Oral, and Tables 10?11 cover the IPT II? Spanish Oral.
