JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Special Education Teacher

Reports To: Director of Education

Position Type: Full Time/Term

Hours of Work: 35 Hours Per Week

Summary:

Working out of the Tsay Keh Dene School located in the community of Tsay Keh Dene, the Special Education Teacher plans, instructs and organizes instructional environments to help students learn subject matter and skills which will contribute to their educational and social development. He/she coordinates and directs the activities of Education Assistants and other school staff. The Special Education Teacher develops and maintains key relationships with the Director of Education, parents/guardians, students, other Teachers, support staff, community members and the Teacher Regulation Branch. The Special Education Teacher develops and maintains individual files on each assigned student. He/she assesses the progress of assigned students and reports to the school and parents. Performs other related duties as required.

Job Duties:

Planning, Preparing and Delivery of Learning Instruction

• Plan courses and subjects in accordance with curriculum and policy

• Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.

• Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.

• Incorporate student centred learning across the curriculum

• Adapt learning and outcomes to match the students of instruction

• Incorporate culturally relevant approaches to curriculum development and delivery

• Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions and demonstrations

• Active usage of concept of Assessment for Learning for all students

• Take responsibility for personal professional development and supports lifelong learning for all

Classroom and Student Management

• Create best practices in classroom management

• Set realistic and measurable expectations for student behaviour and interactions

• Foster a welcoming learning environment for students and parents

• Participate in collaborative groups to learn and promote best practices

• Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.

• Promote the general progress and well-being of students assigned to teach

• Develop and use effective assessment criteria based upon best practices and school policy

Extracurricular Activity Management

• Coordinates a minimum of one extra-curricular activity per week

• Establish effective working relationships with other staff

• Participate in meetings with parents, PAC, other staff or community members to discuss and implement best practices in education

• Participate in programs that foster good relationship between the school and community

• Work cooperatively with school leaders and other professionals in the development and implementation of best practices in pedagogy

• Connect with the community in the integration of pedagogy and the community views and directions of education

Reporting, Records and Administrative Responsibilities

• Keeps accurate and timely records of student progress and make the information available to school officials, parents and students

• Consistent compliance with stated policies of the school and growth plan

• Provide regular verbal and written update on students’ progress to parents and school officials

• Communicate program design and outcomes effectively to parents, students, Executive Director, and Chief and Council

• Contribute to the effective running of the school through suggestion to the supervisor

Requirements:

• Bachelor Degree in Education

• Member of Teacher Regulation Branch (or working towards membership)

• Qualified to teach in Canada

• 3 to 5 years of experience as a Special Education Teacher is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• An understanding of adult Aboriginal student needs.

• Proven ability to successfully work and interact with children, youth, parents/guardians, staff and visitors in a sensitive, effective and professional manner.

• Good organizational, time management and prioritization skills.

• Strong morals and work ethics, sound judgement and reasoning skills, along with a commitment to discretion and privacy.

• Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.

• Physically able to perform all assigned tasks.

• Criminal record check clearance

• Flexibility in the delivery of learning instruction

Work Conditions:

• Must be willing to work and live in a remote northern community.
