Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts and Faith (Narrative) Everything in Girl Scouting is based on the Girl Scout Promise and Law, which includes many of the principles and values common across religions. So while we are a secular organization, Girl Scouts has always encouraged girls to take spiritual journeys via their faiths' religious recognitions.ASK: Has anyone lead a troop that has earned My Promise, My Faith? Has anyone earned any of the P.R.A.Y. awards? Let’s talk about them a little further. The Girl Scouts My Promise, My FaithThis award if for any girl in grades K-12 to experience a faith journey through exploration of the Girl Scout Law and teachings from their faith. These requirements can be done with anyone the girl feels comfortable with - parent, grandparent, clergy, deacon, Sunday School teacher, Godparent, etc. This award can be found in each age level Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting and also on the handout provided today.Girls can earn this national pin each year. There is a different pin available for each year. Option: You can either read these steps or refer to the handout that is provided with this narrative. There are 5 Steps to earn the pin: 1. Choose one line from the Girl Scout Law. Find a story, song, or poem from your faith with the same ideas. Talk with your family or friends about what that line of the Law and the story, song, or poem have in common. 2. Find a woman in your own or another faith community. Ask her how she tries to use that line of the Law in her life. 3. Gather three inspirational quotes by women that fit with that line of the Girl Scout Law. Put them where you can see them every day! 4. Make something to remind you of what you’ve learned. It might be a drawing, painting, or poster. You could also make up a story or a skit. 5. Keep the connection strong. Find out if your faith community offers a recognition program for Girl Scouts. Talk with your friends, family, or a group in your faith community about what you’ve learned about your faith and Girl Scouting. Ask them to help you live the Law and your faith. Maybe you can show them what you just made or perform your skit! My Promise, MY Faith Fact sheet PROGRAMS OF RELIGIOUS ACTIVITES WITH YOUTH (P.R.A.Y.)P.R.A.Y. or Programs of Religious Activities with Youth, created by national religious organizations to encourage the spiritual growth of youth members, are religious recognition programs that reinforce many of the values integral to Girl Scouting and help girls grow stronger in and learn more about their chosen faith. Each religious organization develops and administers its own program. The brochure "To Serve God"?(PDF) lists the religious recognitions created by various faith groups. You can find this brochure, a video explaining religious recognition programs, and other resources for collaborating with faith communities at?P.R.A.Y. Publishing. Other questions to ask: For those troops who have earned the My Promise, My Faith, how did you present the idea to your parents? Did you do it as a troop or did individual families work on it? Did the families include the pastor in what they were earning and learning?RecognitionAsk: What about recognizing the girls after completion of the awards? Do you think it is important? We do. Please don’t forget to include your religious awards in your end of year ceremony, or another award ceremony. A nice option would be to also have the girl recognized at a religious service on Girl Scout Sabbath or Girl Scout Sunday. ................
