II. EXPECTED OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

A. Identify, explain and demonstrate the application of rules during the course of a game.

B. Assess the various strategies of the game.

C. Debate the hazards of officiating, including the physical, emotional and social realms.

D. Analyze and distinguish the foundations of sports officiating from a historical perspective and explain its impact on the evolutionary development of sports.

A. Introduction and foundations of sports officiating; an overview of the historical development of officiating

B. Understanding levels of officiating: A discussion of levels that officials move through in the course of a career

C. Analyzing the relationship of the game facilities, players and equipment: An in-depth look at the above elements as they interrelate with the officiating process

D. Definition of terms: discussion of playing terms

E. Player and coach conduct: Discussion of player and coach code of conduct

F. Enforcement of penalties: Analyze the techniques and tips used to administer penalties.

G. Mechanics of officiating: An in-depth look at the numerous skills needed to master officiating procedures.

H. Team officiating nuances: Discussion of getting to know and understand the interpersonal relationships that commonly occur between officiating team members.

VI. TYPICAL ASSIGNMENTS

A. Reading:

Read The Umpire Strikes Back by Ron Luciano and describe the different types of

pitchers and how they influence umpire-calls balls and strikes.

B. Writing, problem-solving and performance:

1. Prepare an oral presentation of a special situation in a game involving the explanation of a rule to an angry coach.

2. Video analysis of a particular theory or principle about factors relating to officiating, e.g.: anxiety, anticipation, “The Big Game,” etc.

A. Student will maintain a definition of terms notebook

1. Identify and explain the meaning of “umpire Integrity.” Relate your responses to historical examples.

2. Analyze what role the umpire’s judgement plays in the application of the rules in baseball.
