INTRODUCTION

This package is provided to assist with the Education Queensland recruitment and selection process. You are encouraged to read this information carefully.

The selection of an applicant is based on assessment of the relative merit of the applicant. The following elements are taken into account: the extent to which each applicant has abilities, aptitude, skills, qualifications, knowledge, experience, and personal qualities relevant to the carrying out of the duties in question. The applicant’s performance in their previous duties and their potential for development is also considered if relevant.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE VACANT POSITION

The position description includes the “How you will be assessed” section that identify the qualities required for the position in terms of knowledge, experience, skills, abilities and qualifications. The criteria are sometimes listed in priority order;

A work profile is used in conjunction with position descriptions to identify the role, reporting relationships, tasks and areas of responsibility applicable to the position.

HOW TO APPLY

For all positions except principals’ positions an original and one copy of the application should be submitted for each position you are applying for.

A total application should include the following;

a fully and accurately completed Application for Advertised Position coversheet;

a brief summary of your career outlining positions held and major responsibilities;

responses to the “How you will be assessed”; minimum of 1 page her response.

the names, positions and telephone contact numbers for two referees

(Please ensure that your application and attachments are securely held together.)

RESPONDING TO THE SELECTION CRITERIA

If your application does not address each of the selection criteria, you reduce your chance of being "shortlisted" for interview. Your application should specifically address each of the selection criteria and the school profile or work profile. Responses to the selection criteria should concisely and fully describe how you consider yourself suitable against each of the selection criteria. Wherever possible give examples do not simply state that you meet the selection criteria. The wording of the selection criteria indicates the required level of knowledge, skills and abilities needed for the position. Examples include:

demonstrated or proven ability means that you should have successfully performed the activity or used the skill in the past/actual experience rather than just having potential;

general ability or general knowledge implies that you have the potential to acquire the skill or knowledge - if you have not had direct experience with the aspects of work required in the position you could demonstrate your ability by comparing it to similar or equivalent responsibilities, tasks, etc. or relevant studies undertaken; and

thorough, sound or high level gives an indication that advanced skill or knowledge is required.

CLOSING DATE

Applications for advertised vacancies close at 4.00 pm on the date appearing on the position description. Late applications and additional material may be accepted at the discretion of the selection panel. Lodgement of the “Application for Advertised Position” coversheet only by the due date and time is considered to be lodgement of your application. Consequent lodgement of other application material including response to selection criteria is then considered as additional material. Applications received after the closing date will be considered as late applications and treated accordingly.

LODGEMENT OF APPLICATION

All applications should be marked "Private and Confidential" and forwarded to Kathryn Charteris, BSM, P.O. Box 4787 Springfield Qld 4300 or handed into the reception at 70 Parkland Drive, Springfield Central.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process may include: shortlisting, interview, including possible use of selection exercises and reference checks. Panels operate in accordance with departmental recruitment and selection guidelines and consist of at least two members.

SHORTLISTING

The shortlisting process determines who should be interviewed. The selection panel establishes the process for shortlisting candidates. All applications received are then examined and evaluated by the selection panel.

INTERVIEWS

During the interview you will have an opportunity to explain or clarify information given in your application. A consistent series of questions relating to the selection criteria will be used to provide a consistent interview structure. This enables the panel to comparatively assess each applicant. Applicants will be given the opportunity to direct questions to the selection panel, provide relevant information, and produce work samples to support their claims to the position. Interviews may be conducted on the telephone.

OTHER SELECTION TECHNIQUES

In many circumstances, other selection techniques will be used in the selection process. You may be asked to provide examples of previous work, or undertake appropriate tests or structured group and/or individual exercises.

REFERENCE CHECKS

Reference checks will be undertaken, at least, in relation to the preferred applicant or applicants. They will be obtained from referees with first-hand knowledge of performance relevant to the selection criteria, preferably supervisors. Selection panels will use referee checks to verify the claims of the preferred applicant or applicants in relation to achievements, qualifications, employment history and other significant matters. Written personal references are not required as part of the application.

APPOINTMENT PROCESS

The selection panel will nominate an appointee to the relevant approving authority. Applicants are advised in writing of the selection outcome.

POST-SELECTION FEEDBACK

Post-selection feedback is available to all applicants upon request from the chair of the selection panel. Feedback is based upon an assessment of the applicants’ suitability in relation to each of the selection criteria.

RECOGNITION OF SERVICE

New appointees to the Queensland Public Service may be given credit, upon request, for sick and long service leave purposes where they have not had a break in service that exceeds 12 months. This applies to service within Commonwealth and other State Public Services; Statutory Authorities; Public Hospital Boards; Local Authorities; and Tertiary Education Institutions.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYMENT

Education Queensland is an equal opportunity employer. Equity in employment is about allowing people to do their best, regardless of their sex, age, race, material status or other attributes irrelevant to the carrying out of the duties of the position.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK

The Commission for Children and Young People Act 2000 requires the preferred applicant to be subject to a “working with children check” as part of the employment screening process. Further details regarding this check may be obtained by accessing the web site of the Commission for Children and Young People at the following internet address:
