PINK OUT! – Each year, one football game is dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness with a Pink Out Game. Cancer is a devastating disease that has touched so many lives. If you ask anyone, he or she can probably name a family member or close relative or friend who is battling cancer, or was taken by cancer. They may very well be a cancer survivor. Breast cancer in women (and men) is diagnosed very frequently. In my own family, I have lost three to cancer, including my father who was taken by pancreatic cancer. This week we want to recognize those who have survived, are currently battling, or were taken by cancer. We reflect on the many lives and families that bear the struggle with their loved ones. We want to bring breast cancer awareness to the forefront and remind everyone that early detection is the key to successful treatment and survival. To all of those in our own Brahma community who are battling cancer, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Come and join us this Friday at 7:30 pm at Comalander in your best pink shirt, not just to cheer on the team, but also to cheer on all of those who fight the good fight. Go Brahmas!

Here is all the news for the week:

FRONT CIRCLE REPAIR - The front circle is currently under repair.  Some of you may have noticed the asphalt sticking up on the exit side of the front circle.  This has been assessed to be a hazardous situation and required immediate repair.

As a result, the front circle will remain closed to regular traffic until the repairs are complete.  The only traffic that will be allowed in the front circle will be our special needs buses.

Please be aware that repairs may take up to a week, so you may want to plan accordingly.

SAFE DRIVING CHALLENGE - Calling all Brahma students, families, friends and community.  NEISD Council of PTAs needs your help to promote a safe driving message and win a competition between all NEISD high school campuses. We have all partnered with Safe 2 Save to reward safe driving.  S2S is a free app which rewards you for every mile you safely drive. You simply download the app and open it before you start your drive. You can then redeem safe driving points at various vendors for free food and other items. Each school has a code and when you download the app go to the trophy icon and type in DMHS to be sure our campus gets safe driving points and wins the competition! Anyone can put in the DMHS code and add points to our score.  Once the competition starts, you will be able to keep track of how we are doing on a leaderboard.  Ask everyone you know who drives and even passengers to download the app so we can gather as many points as possible! We know MacArthur HS is the best campus in the district, now lets show everyone we are the best drivers too!  If you have any questions, please email Liz Wayne, parent sponsor MAC PTSA Smart Driving Club, at lcwayne@.  The competition runs from October 15-November 15. Be a part MAC and let’s take the challenge.

TOBACCO/VAPE PRODUCTS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY – Prior to the start of the school year a letter was distributed via email to all North East ISD parents which detailed both the dangers of “vaping” – i.e. using electronic cigarettes – and the potential disciplinary consequences that may result from doing so on district property or at a district-sponsored event. I am sending you this additional reminder given that vaping continues to occur on the MacArthur High School campus. In addition to my concern over the health risks this behavior poses, I also need to reiterate my continued intent to recommend expulsion for students who are found to be vaping THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the principal psychoactive ingredient in marijuana) or have THC in their possession. I feel that this strong stand is imperative not only to remain compliant with state law and the North East ISD Student Code of Conduct, but also to help to deter a behavior that is endangering our students.

The potential health hazards that vaping presents are well documented. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating 6 deaths and more than 380 reported cases of severe lung illness related to vaping and is encouraging users of all ages to stop vaping as they do so. The CDC is working closely with the Food and Drug Administration and state agencies to assess the effects that vaping may have on young people in particular.

Regardless of these findings, possession and use of e-cigarettes/vaping devices remains illegal under state law for persons under 18. All devices, oils, and other paraphernalia are explicitly prohibited by the North East ISD Student Code of Conduct for students of all ages. Confiscated devices, cartridges and oils will be subject to immediate on-campus chemical testing. Students who are in possession of any item which tests positively for THC will be recommended for expulsion as such possession is a state jail felony. Note that possessing or being under the influence of any controlled substance as detailed above can also result in separate criminal penalties as determined by law enforcement.

For the safety and wellbeing of our children, please help me to reinforce the serious safety and disciplinary consequences, which can result from vaping. You can access for additional resources, which may help you to initiate this conversation with your child. Thank you for your continued collaboration as we strive to ensure the safest possible educational environment for all students.

ACTIVITIES -

MAC BAND – This past Saturday, our awesome Band, Color Guard, and Brahmadoras were back at Rutledge Stadium, competing in the Yamaha US Bands Marching Competition. Mac took the field at 3:15 pm, on a much cooler Saturday. This time they did their complete performance and it was spectacular! The awed the crowd with their performance. MAC won first place in Group V, Best Effect, Best Music, Best Color Guard, and Best Percussion! The Brahmas were in the finals, performing at 9 pm. Once again, it was an excellent performance. MAC Football – The Brahmas were back in action on a chilly Friday night against Johnson, after a week off. Our awesome Brahma defense held Johnson scoreless for the first quarter, while MAC got on the board on a pass from Austin Lee to Jaxson Deason for a 74-yard touchdown, to take the 6 to 0 lead. Johnson took a 14 to 6 lead in the second quarter, but MAC came right back with an amazing 36-yard run by Austin Lee for the touchdown, and Charles Collins took the pass in for the 2-point conversion and a 14-point tie. The Brahmas would score again on an 18-yard pass from Austin Lee to Charles Collins, followed by the extra point from Alonzo Escobar. The Brahmas would score one last time, when James Odunsi made a 50-yard run for the score and 27-pounts for MAC. Unfortunately, it would not be enough. In spite of the loss, our Brahmas played an inspired game and never gave in, giving their best to the very end of the game. I for one am very proud of our boys and the great showing they made.
