NOTES TO INSTRUCTOR
1. If there are more than 15 cadets the class should be divided into two or more squads.
2. Instruct cadets about going down on one knee when feeling faint.
ORDER
1. Order the squad into a suitable formation.
MOVEMENT
WHAT: In this lesson you will learn calling the role, numbering and proving.
WHY: Calling the role is executed to determine who is present at a certain time. Numbering is used to designate individuals in the squad and/or determine the number of cadets on parade. Proving is executed as a means of identifying cadets in a squad.
WHERE: Every training night will begin with the calling of the role. Senior cadets most often execute numbering when they need to know how many cadets are on parade, or are leaving to go on a trip. Proving allows you to properly ask a question(s) while formed up, either in drill class or on parade.
PERFORMANCE CHECK
1. At the end of the lesson each of you will be required to correctly number, prove, and take part in the calling of the role as ordered.
|TIME | LESSON |NOTES |
DEMONSTRATE
1. Demonstrate calling the role.
EXPLAIN
2. On the command, "ATTEN – TION, ANSWER TO YOUR NAME, STAND
AT – EASE”, each squad member shall come to attention as his/her name
is called and answer in one of the following ways:
a. “Sir” or “Ma’am” if the person calling the role is a Warrant Officer
First Class;
b. “Warrant or Warrant Officer Second Class”, “Flight Sergeant”,
“Sergeant”, or “Corporal” if the person calling the role holds one of
these ranks; and
c. “Present” if the person calling the role is below the rank of Corporal.
3. When the role call is being supervised by a person senior in rank to the
person calling the role, each squad member shall answer to his/her name
with the correct response for the rank of the supervisor.
4. Each squad member shall stand at ease after answering his/her name.
ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS?
EXECUTE
1. Practice calling the role and have each cadet answer to their name.
DEMONSTRATE
1. Demonstrate numbering.
EXPLAIN
2. Numbering is used to designate individuals in a squad, and to determine
the number of cadets on parade.
3. On the command, "SQUAD – NUMBER, the front rank only shall count off
from right to left. The right hand cadet calls out ONE and the next
TWO, and so on. The head and eyes remain still, and there is no pause
between numbers.
4. Each individual in the centre and rear rank takes the number of the front
rank individual being covered.
5. When an error in numbering occurs, the command “AS YOU WERE” may
be ordered followed by the last correct number called out. The squad
number so designated repeats his/her number and the numbering drill
continues. If the command “AS YOU WERE, SQUAD – NUMBER” is
ordered, the squad will renumber from the beginning.
ANY THERE ANY QUESTIONS?
EXECUTE
1. Practice numbering.
DEMONSTRATE
1. Demonstrate proving.
EXPLAIN
2. Proving is used to identify the flank person when the squad is being
divided into several groups. Cadets of the squad may also use it
to identify themselves. It may be necessary to number the cadets prior
to proving.
3. On the command, “NUMBERS _______ , _______, ______, PROVE, the
cadets designated raise their left forearm parallel to the ground,
keeping their left elbow close to the body and the hand closed as for the
position of attention.
4. On the command, “ATTEN – TION”, the cadets who proved adopt the
position of attention.
ANY THERE ANY QUESTIONS?
EXECUTE
1. Practice proving with the squad collectively.
2. Practice proving with the squad individually.
3. Practice proving with the squad collectively.
REPEAT
1. Practice all three of the movements: calling the role, numbering and proving.
32 MINs PERFORMANCE CHECK
Test Details - Each cadet will be checked independently and will be required to execute numbering, proving, and be able to take part in the calling of the role as required.
1. It is essential that all individual and collective mistakes are corrected in order that these mistakes do not become a habitual pattern.
2. Drill has an overall assessment upon completion of training for this PO; therefore, emphasis must be placed on practice and the correction of mistakes.
CONCLUSION
RESTATE THE MOVEMENT

WHY: Calling the role is executed to determine who is present at a certain time. Numbering is used to designate individuals in the squad and/or determine the number of cadets on parade. Proving is executed as a means of identifying cadets in a squad.
WHERE: Every training night will begin with the calling of the role. Numbering is most often executed by senior cadets when they need to know how many cadets are on parade, or are leaving to go on a trip. Proving allows you to properly ask a question(s) while formed up, either in drill class or on parade.
LEVEL OF ACHIEVEMENT
