LGBTIQ Legal ServiceThe LGBTIQ Legal Service is a health justice partnership between St Kilda Legal Service and Thorne Harbour Health. We assist LGBTIQ clients across Victoria with legal issues like discrimination, name changes, employment, criminal law, family violence and more. Job titleProject Support and Community Engagement Officer (9 month part-time contract)PurposeTo provide project support to the LGBTIQ Legal Service team and engage with community to (1) deliver a legal needs analysis and (2) enhance service design, with a particular focus on building the service’s digital presence.ScopeThe LGBTIQ Legal Service Legal Needs Analysis will provide much-needed research into the legal and associated support needs of LGBTIQ Victorians based on the services delivered during the LGBTIQ Legal Service pilot project. The role will support the production of this report by maintaining our client database, conducting online surveys and telephone interviews with our clients and stakeholders and build connections with a range of organisations across Melbourne and regional Victoria to better understand the needs of LGBTIQ people with legal issues that we haven’t been able to reach. The role will also oversee the 2020 Midsumma LGBTIQ Community Legal Needs Survey, run in partnership with other community legal centres. The role will undertake general administrative tasks to support the service including answering enquiries, client appointment booking and liaising with a designer to create a standalone LGBTIQ Legal Service website, factsheets and other design collateral. Contract term9 months – (18 hours per week during standard 9am to 5pm office hours, days and times to be negotiated flexibly) Reports toExecutive Officer & Principal LawyerKey responsibilitiesEngage effectively with internal and external stakeholders across the LGBTIQ sector and legal assistance sector. Assisting with the preparation of the LGBTIQ legal needs analysis, including writing case studies, interviewing stakeholders and report writing. Assisting with the preparation of the LGBTIQ Legal Service pilot evaluation in collaboration with an external evaluator in accordance with the SKLS Monitoring and Evaluation Framework. Liaising with external digital design consultants in the creation of the LGBTIQ Legal Service website and other design collateral. Drafting reports on casework, community legal education and law reform activity to the SKLS board, funders and other entities as directed. Providing organisational and administrative support in the management of a diverse range of projects, including documenting procedures and project coordination to ensure deadlines are met. Direct client support including conducting client intake calls, letter writing and responding to emails. Event management support for specific projects, including the launch of the LGBTIQ legal needs analysis and LGBTIQ inclusive practice toolkit for community lawyersGeneral administration, including answering email enquiries and booking rooms at outreach locations. Collaborate with and provide support to volunteer students and lawyers, in collaboration with the Principal Lawyer, as directed.Other duties as directed by the Principal Lawyer.General dutiesCommitment to the mission and philosophy of St Kilda Legal Service.Work cooperatively with all staff members to advance the organisation and strengthen the service delivery model.Participate effectively in organisational strategic planning initiatives, policy & procedure development, and projects to advance St Kilda Legal.Develop and strengthen networks, engage the support and involvement of a range of individuals and organisations.Adhere to all SKLS policies and procedures.Participate in meetings as required.Key Selection Criteria – Mandatory Skills and ExperiencePartial or full completion of a degree in law or an associated field (such as social work, policy, gender studies or sociology), with subsequent relevant experience.Excellent understanding of the legal and non-legal issues arising for LGBTIQ+ Victorians, including an understanding of the particular concerns of people living with HIV, trans and gender diverse people, sex workers, people with intersex variations, people experiencing homelessness, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities, people living with drug and alcohol addiction, people in prison, and those living with disabilities and mental health conditions. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to exercise initiative, judgment and problem-solving skills, with a focus on responding to complex issues with sensitivity and confidentiality. Ability to work with minimal supervision and manage competing demands within a small team of staff and volunteers.Key Selection Criteria – Desirable Skills and ExperienceFamiliarity with Community Legal Centres (CLCs) and health justice partnerships, and a demonstrated commitment to social justice.Knowledge of Victorian LGBTIQ community organisations, as well as good networking skills.Project management experience, including the ability to develop project proposals and budgets and coordinate tasks to ensure deadlines are met.Salary & conditionsSocial Community Home Care & Disability Services (SCHCADS) Award 2010 Level 4.2.Generous salary packaging of $15,900 (pro-rata) available, together with annual leave loading, bonus leave over Christmas to New Years, and the option for flexible work arrangements.
