Now that summer¡¯s in full swing, we want to help you to make

the most of Hawai¡®i¡¯s hottest months. From projects that infuse some excitement into lazy

days to festive food, crafts and event ideas, we¡¯ve got a few suggestions to help you get

the most out of your family¡¯s summer.

Encourage your children to enjoy the school break and have something to show for it with

these fun D.I.Y projects you can do together (pg.65). For Friendship Day in August, honor

your besties with something special (pg.55). And, on August 18, Statehood Day o?ers

a great excuse to rally your friends and loved ones for a beach park picnic that won¡¯t

break the bank (pg.45).

Finally, as you get ready to send the kids back to the classroom, nutrition doesn¡¯t

have to take a backseat with these suggestions for healthy school lunches (pg.3).

HEALTHY SCHOOL

LUNCH IDEAS

Getting your keiki to consume nutritious meals and snacks can be

tricky¡ªespecially on school days when they¡¯re out of sight. Make

lunch a time your kids look forward to with these tasty (and healthy!)

out-of-the-box items they won¡¯t turn their noses up at.

Dragon Rollups: Layer slices of ham, turkey and cheese on top of each

other. Set a long, thin slice of cucumber, a slice of red bell pepper, and

another slice of cucumber side by side in the middle of your meats, so they

just poke out of one side (the ¡°fangs¡± and ¡°tongue¡±). Roll up and seal it

with a small dollop of cream cheese, then place cream cheese ¡°eyeballs¡±

on top, with a raisin in each. Pair with sliced apples and carrots.

Banana Sushi: Take a whole wheat tortilla and spread generously with

peanut, almond or sunflower butter. Sprinkle with wheat germ or flax.

Roll a whole banana up in the tortilla and cut into bite-size ¡°sushi¡± pieces.

Pair with orange slices and a savory snack of goldfish, pretzels and raisins.

D.I.Y Tacos: What makes this dish fun is using a ¡°bento box¡± style lunchbox

that keeps foods separated, so kids can build their own tacos. Use the

largest compartment for your protein of choice (ground turkey and black

beans or chicken) and the smaller sections for lettuce, tomato, cheese and

sour cream. Include avocado and squeeze lemon juice on the pieces to

prevent browning. Wrap up a few small wheat tortillas, add a juice box

and lunch is served!
