TOUCHMARK AT MOUNT BACHELOR VILLAGE

Starbucks brings Coffee Master Class to Touchmark

For many, coffee is a must-have morning routine. Like fine wines, coffee offers a rich world of taste, smell, and feel. Touchmark is now enjoying a unique opportunity to explore the world of coffee with three Coffee Master Classes, presented by Starbucks.

The Starbucks Coffee Master Program is a 10-week course, complete with classwork and "finals." Begun last month, participating residents are meeting with the coffee experts, who bring coffee and light snacks to pair with the tastings. Their knowledge of tasting and brewing basics, Starbucks roasting philosophy, and the origins of coffee are being expanded. Next month, they will be baristas.

Brittany Counts, Manager of the Starbucks shop in downtown, is one of the instructors and is excited to bring this opportunity to residents. After partnering with Touchmark and being one of the sponsors for The Longest Day color run/walk, she found she loved spending time with the whole Touchmark family. This inspired her to work with Life Enrichment/Wellness Director Anne Wilson to create this course, which never before has been taught outside Starbucks. The other teacher helping Brittany is Leigh Cepriano, who manages the Century Drive Starbucks.

Kay Shockley is one of the participants. "I've lived in New York, which has a Starbucks on almost every corner, and Louisiana, which has a wonderful history of rich coffee, so I've always been a huge fan of coffee and Starbucks," she says. "I'm really excited to learn more about coffee and all the new products that Starbucks has added over the years."

There are eight full classes in the program, with the last two dedicated to residents giving a presentation showcasing what they've learned. New baristas will then receive the black Starbucks barista apron embroidered with their name.

"If residents weren't able to participate in this course now, two more are planned in 2018," says Anne. Each 10-week course is limited to 20 residents.

A crispy time of year

We've all heard the old proverb "an apple a day keeps

the doctor away," but what exactly makes apples such a

widely praised superfood? The complex health cocktail

make the apple a nutritional powerhouse. Vitamins C,

Vice President, Wellness & Marketing A, and B-complex strengthen your body's resistance

to illness, maintain healthy red blood cell counts, and

protect the nervous system. Sprinkle in some dietary fiber--great for balancing cholesterol and supporting

gut health--and fundamental dietary minerals, such as calcium, potassium, and phosphorus, and you've got

an eatable weapon that would definitely be a doctor's worst enemy.

In recent years, studies have shown the apple could also be more than a healthy snack. Some scientists say possible health benefits could include: lowering the risk of neurological decline and diseases (such as Parkinson's disease and dementia), stroke, and Type 2 diabetes. Many studies also showed apples could help prevent gallstones, strengthen your heart, and promote a healthy weight.

Apples aren't just a superfood, though. They're also a culinary explosion of taste and texture. Just like good

wines, apples are known for their many unique flavor profiles, textures, and colors. Take a look at these

popular and delicious varieties and how they can be enjoyed:

? Pink Lady: floral and fruity, with a

slight tropical flavor; eating and baking ? Fuji: sweet, slightly tart, and earthy;

eating and salads ? McIntosh: classic apple flavor;

Here's a simple way to enjoy the healthy benefits and yummy goodness of apples:

? Remove core of apple ? Turn the apple on its side and

make thin slices ? Spread each slice with a nut butter ? Top with coconut flakes ? Enjoy!

? Crispin: slightly astringent with a

Making our mark ... We are Touchmark

Touchmark is a 2017 recipient of an Innovator Award from the International Council on Active Aging!
