Initial Teacher Certification Instructionsfor Teacher Education Program CandidatesOffice of Educator Preparation, USM you complete your USM state approved and nationally accredited teacher preparation program, the next step will be to apply for and obtain initial teacher certification. Please follow these steps:Make sure that Linda Evans, Certification Coordinator, in USM’s Office of Educator Preparation has documentation that you have completed any academic requirements that were outstanding at the time of your application into your Teacher Education Program. Please make sure an official transcript is mailed to Linda Evans from the school where any missing credits were taken.You are ready for the next important step when all of your Teacher Education Program requirements are complete (including Praxis I & Praxis II scores), all grades are finalized on the MaineStreet, and all prerequisite coursework is plete the Certification Recommendation Application in Tk20 which is a checklist to signal that you have fulfilled all program requirements: Completion of prerequisite courseworkPraxis I/II pass scoresStandards Review completion + documented in TK20Final grades posted to USM transcript Log in to Tk20 as a student Click the Applications tabClick Create Select Recommendation for Certification Application from the drop down menuFor students who do not have Tk20 accounts, a paper version of this form is available on the Office of Educator Preparation website: under Resources select Teacher Certification Process, then Recommendation for Teacher Certification Form. Complete and return or scan and email to the to the Office of Educator Preparation address listed below. The Certification Coordinator will review and verity this information and post the date of your certification recommendation in Tk20. The Certification Coordinator will then forward your name to the Maine Department of Education (MDOE) and recommend you for certification in your content area(s). At the same time, the USM Registrar’s Office will also receive this notification, and post a comment to your transcript noting program completion. You will automatically be sent a copy of the finalized transcript for use in your application for certification to the MDOE. Please wait for this transcript before applying for initial teacher certification.Get fingerprinted, if you have not already done so. For more information: you receive your transcript with comment, complete an Application for Initial Certification from the MDOE website: state.me.us/education/cert/cert.htm and submit it along with all supporting materials to:Maine Department of EducationDivision of CertificationState House Station #23Augusta, ME 04333(207) 626-8989 (automated) or (207) 624-6603Applications for Initial Certification are also available at the Office of Educator Preparation website .NOTE: It is very important to wait until you have completed all program requirements and receive a final transcript before applying for initial teacher certification. If you file your application without this final transcript, the MDOE will not know that you are a program graduate and will analyze your materials as if you were initiating the alternative certification process. This could cause a delay in processing your application. Please be aware that USM’s recommendation for certification helps expedite certain steps in evaluating your application. Be sure to include all supporting materials with your application.A check for the $100 (or more if you are applying for more than one certification) application fee made payable to Treasurer, State of Maine.Passing Praxis I exam scores (if you did not designate Maine Department of Education as score recipient for the exam.)Passing Praxis II exam scores (if you did not designate Maine Department of Education as score recipient for the exam.)All undergraduate and graduate transcripts noting degree(s) awarded and recommendation for certification by USMNote: The State will only accept official transcripts.
