Doing Statistics on the Ti-84 and the Ti-86

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How to enter data in a list for analysis?

Press STAT and then select “Edit,” moving left or right with the Navigation Button if necessary. The first option under Edit is “1. Edit,” so press ENTER. You will now see columns that can have data input. Note the column heading, or “name,” you will need to reference it later. What if there already is data in the column? See FAQ #2.

2. How to clear data from a list?

You do not want to delete data points, one at a time. Use the Navigation Button to go up to the column heading, where the name is, i.e., L1, L2, etc., or whatever you might have custom named it. Press CLEAR the press the ‘down’ direction on the Navigation Button. This will erase all of the data in a column, and it is not reversible, so be careful. There is no, “edit undo.”

3. How to enter more data or edit the data already entered?

After the data is entered, you can leave the screen since the data is saved automatically. Pressing the STAT button allows you to go back to ‘Edit’ or add more data, or do analysis.

4. How do you get the Five Number Summary? That is the information you use to create the Box Plot.

Press the STAT button, and then using the Navigation Button, go right to CALC which stands for ‘calculate’, not ‘calculus.’ Choose the first option which is, “1-Var Stat,” which stands for Single Variable Statistics. After choosing that option, enter the name of the list. If you are using L1, L2, etc. You can enter the name directly using the second function on the 1, 2, 3 key, etc., or press the LIST button (which is the second function on the STAT button) and make your selection from NAMES option. After you press enter on the name of the list where your data is, you need to press ENTER again. You will then get a lot of statistics to look at, but you will have to scroll down to the see the Five Number Summary.

5. How can you sort the data in a LIST?

If you press STAT and go to ‘Edit,’ you will see there is a ‘SORT A ( ‘, and a ‘SORT D ( ‘, which will sort the data in an ascending or descending order. You must put in the name of the list, and then press ENTER. The screen will say DONE, at which point if you want to see the sorted data, you need to go into data via STAT, ‘Edit.’
