Problem Set 0

The idea here is to verify your capability to do three important things:

1. Follow instructions

2. Copy Excel spreadsheets and charts into a Word document

3. Print the document using the network printers

All of these skills will be needed to do real-life stats, so it is a good idea to make sure you can do them. There is no way to get this wrong, except by failing to do it at all. If you have any problems with either 2 or 3 above, please ask for help from Juran (part 2) or the ITG staff (part 3).

It might be helpful, before doing this assignment, to read the two documents “Documenting Excel Calculations in Word” and “Microsoft Excel: A Self Assessment Exercise”. The latter document also has a solution. All three are in your course packet, and available online on the downloads page.

Take the following data and enter them into an Excel worksheet:

|72 |92 |68 |54 |72 |

|62 |53 |58 |69 |71 |

|77 |73 |57 |71 |88 |

|88 |86 |65 |76 |74 |

|87 |64 |67 |71 |73 |

Set up a spreadsheet to calculate the mean and standard deviation. Insert comments to show your formulas. Use File — Page Setup — Sheet to show the gridlines, row and column headings, and the comments “as shown on sheet”[1]. Paste a picture of your spreadsheet into a Word document and save it.

Your picture ought to look like this:

[pic]

Make a histogram of the data and paste it into your Word document. Try to make it look exactly like this, and ask for help if you need it:

Print your document using the network, and turn it as a hard copy.

There is no pressure here. It’s OK to ask Juran (or anyone else) for help! Just don’t let someone else do it for you — these are skills you need to know.

Notes:

1. You’re supposed to make the little spreadsheet picture (a) using the Autoformulabox macro to show their formula, (b) using Excel settings to show the grid lines, column headings, and the comments, and (c) using Alt+PrtSc and Paste Special – Picture to paste it into a Word document.

(It's pretty obvious when you’re in denial about this stuff. You can tell if somebody didn't use the macro, because the comments are sized wrong. You can tell if they didn't use Alt+PrtSc because they'll have the whole Excel window showing, or they'll have tried to crop it clean with less-than-perfect results.)

2. The histogram should be a beautiful "Juran" histogram, with the same X axis labels and no gap between the bars. Get rid of the grey background and add horizontal grid lines.

[1] Instructions for doing this the easy way, with a macro, are detailed in “Documenting Excel Calculations in Word”.
