Summer Mailer 2018Dear Dreher Band Members, Prospective Members and Families,Greetings from the Band Room! Welcome to the next exciting chapter in the Dreher Band. Whether you or your student previously participated or not, we want you to now! This is a phenomenal time to be a member in the Dreher Band! We are excited about the addition of the super smart, multi-talented and giving freshmen class. So many of you were either on the Principal’s or A/B honor roles, and received Superior ratings at Solo and Ensemble. Our other new students are just great people who will fit right in! Welcome to the Dreher Band family! To our returning members, you are the bedrock of our organization and I am counting on you to continue to embrace our new students, demonstrate excellence and make sure we have a great start for the new year! Last year was full of exceptional experiences, new friendships and incredible moments and this year will be even better because of you. To find out more about this year read on!New for 2018-2019Along with our award winning marching band, concert band and big band, as well as our brass, percussion & steel ensembles, and United Sound, we are super excited to begin the Dreher Chapter of Modern Music Masters (Tri-M). Tri-M’s service requirement will provide the impetus for our smaller ensemble and soloist performers to meet monthly, enjoy others' musical growth, and play at area nursing homes and community events. I feel we need to share our musical gifts more regularly. Auditions will take place in September. Band Expectations1) Fulfill our mission statement: Strive for greatness to inspire lifelong musicians!2) Take care of yourself, those around you and your instruments3) Be kind!4) Notice people doing the right thing5) Do and turn in your homework for all of your classes6) Show up prepared7) Pay Your Fair Share8) Become a better musician everyday (Refer to No.1)Class ExpectationsDreher Concert Band I is not a required class for graduation. It is an elective class and open to all Dreher High School students through audition. However, it is curricular, detailed, beautiful, and sometimes intense. And Honors credit may be earned for Level Ill (Juniors) and IV (Seniors). Students are expected to actively participate in every class, audition for the RCSDI Honor Band for Concert Performance Assessment Ensembles Membership and seat placement, attend all scheduled rehearsals after school prior to performances, and attend all required performances (see attached schedule). To avoid conflicts, please schedule all Doctor's appointments, haircuts, private lessons and tutoring for after school on Wednesdays. Students who do not wish to consistently/actively participate in rehearsals or attend performances are highly recommended to not sign up for this class and choose a different elective. Concert Band is not an easy 100 in the grade book, but it is awesome! The Dreher Marching Band is a completely optional (not required) elective class available to all Dreher High School students through audition. However, it is also awesome, curricular, entirely after school, and HS credit for those who register and complete the class, and can be Honors Credit for Level Ill and IV. The Dreher Marching Band expects you to attend all scheduled rehearsals and performances (See attached schedule). There will be performances added as the season progresses for the school, community and statewide events, but attendance at the additional performances are not required to meet class requirements although we encourage you to perform as much as possible. Please schedule all Doctor's appointments, private lessons, haircuts and tutoring for Wednesdays after school. If you know you have a conflict with October 20 and 27, 2018, please do not register for marching band or attend band camp. Also, please do not schedule SAT, PSAT, ACT, family vacations, work or other events on September 29, October 6, 20 and 27. In order for the band to be our best, it is essential students who have a spot on the field or in the front ensemble attend the 2 pre-assessment competitions and the SCBDA Lower State and State Marching Band Championship Assessments. The current required schedule for the marching band season is available at and on the attached calendar. During the school year, the marching band will rehearse from 3:30-5:55 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. This amazing group makes sure we are fed, the props are built, things are moved, students are brought or taken home, fundraise, chaperone and they get front row experiences with other parents who help us all strive for greatness too. Just like the students, the folks who give the most-get the most. There is no secret handshake, no registration fee, and no previous experience required (but always appreciated). We encourage you to attend our monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of each month (in the Band Room) where we celebrate the bands’ accomplishments, share the bands’ needs & opportunities, and finalize plans for our events. The Dreher Bands need you to volunteer, attend performances, applaud appropriately with as much excitement as you are able, and become a part of this great organization! More details how, where, and when will be distributed at the Marching Band Potluck Supper on August 10 and the Dreher Open House.Charms Office AssistantThe Dreher Bands’ major communication portal, inventory & library database, and funds tracker is the cloud based Charms Office Assistant. The web site is . To Login, click on the Parents/Students/Members portal. Our school code is dreherhsband. To visit your student’s account, enter the code used for their district computer login. If you have a login issue, please email me at Christopher.lee@ and I will help you. Master ClassesThere is no secret as to how the Dreher Band improved so much in the past few years. With special thanks to the Band Boosters, 5 years ago, we started to bring in instrumental specialists. These experts work with a small number of our students on fundamentals, reading, technical studies and repertoire. These pullout sessions are not intended to replace private lessons, but they allow our students to get their questions answered, learn new techniques, and become more aware of their sound production/projection and quality. This service is not free and is not paid by the district. Each student’s Concert Band Fair Share helps to pay for this service. Thank you for your support in adhering to these payment deadlines and policies.A Few Helpful Hints? Attendance is expected at ALL band events. Things come up that can't be avoided and that's where communication is the key. Please communicate with Dr. Lee by sending an email at least 2 weeks before a scheduled event or rehearsal. Failure to do so may result in a 0 Test Grade and possible removal from the ensemble. My contact information is: (Christopher.lee@) Please use it. Text, call, email.... communicate. We are here to serve you. Please allow us to do so.Students: You are in High School. Your parents/guardians want to support all you do but do not appreciate surprises. Earn the responsibility you want by staying aware of your calendar and events. YOU (the student) need to remind your parents/guardians when events are happening prior to the event. Develop a weekly routine to communicate your weekly schedule with your folks? Your uniform/tuxedo/gown was very expensive and took us a great deal of effort to purchase. Replacement costs for a full MB uniform is over $375/Tuxedo $150 and Gown $85. Don't take this for granted. Take care of your uniform and hang it up with care.? Be ready to be amazing! Start moving, running, dancing, breathing and especially playing your instrument. The first week of Band Camp is 8 AM to 8 PM. Make sure you are in shape!? If you are in Concert Band, we shall play on the first day of classes. Make sure you have your instrument ready, repaired and with all your supplies. No instrument = 0 for class participation. Be prepared!? MB and CB –Know/Learn all 12 major scales. Make a checklist of the scales you know and the scales you do not. 1) Start with one note at a time. 2) Link the bottom 5notes in half notes. 3) Start on the 5th scale degree and go up to the 9th scale degree in half notes. 4) Play the entire scale in half notes. 5) PIay the scales until every pitch speaks clearly. 6) Use a metronome for consistent note lengths (Start slowly). 7-work to play all 12 scales in under 2 minutes? When in doubt, ask someone. We are happy to help!2018-2019 Dreher Marching Band Student/ Parent-ContractEvery student in the band is essential and important.
