Race stereotypes are not the only kind out there. Gender stereotypes also exist. For example, if you say that men are better than women, you’re stereotyping all men and all women. If you say that all women like to cook, you are stereotyping women. Sexual orientation stereotypes are also common. These stereotypes occur when you have negative views on gays or lesbian individuals. Common StereotypesMen and Women6667537592000There are also some common stereotypes of men and women, such as:Men are strong and do all the work.Women aren't as smart as a man.Women can’t do as good of a job as a man.Girls are not good at sports.Guys are messy and unclean.Women need men to “save” them (think of princess movies!)Girls play with dolls or play house and boys play sports or video games. Boys need to be tough and shouldn’t cryDo you think boys and girls should be “told” what to be? Why or why not? Cultures393382541656000Stereotypes also exist about races, cultures and countries as a whole. Here are some examples:All white Americans are fat, lazy, and dumb. Homer Simpson is the perfect example of this stereotype.?All Americans are cocky and impatient.Mexicans are lazy, came into America illegally, eat tacos and cut grass.African Americans are better athletes. All Arabs and Muslims are terrorists. All Jewish people are greedy. All Asians are good at math. African Americans and Latinos are dangerous and in gangs. Why do people believe these stereotypes about cultures and races? Groups of IndividualsA different type of stereotype also involves grouping of individuals. Skaters, Goths, Gangsters, and Preps are a few examples. Most of this stereotyping is taking place in schools. For example:Goths wear black clothes, black makeup, are depressed and hated by society.Punks wear mohawks, spikes, chains, are a menace to society and are always getting in trouble.Girls are only concerned about physical appearance. All blonds are unintelligent. All teenagers are rebels or obnoxious.Only really skinny women can become models. How can these stereotypes be harmful?Chapter 2 (Pages 19-31)476250172085Reading Focus: As you read chapter 2, look for examples of stereotypes.
