Denard J Coleman, Director of the Adolescent Youth Development and Waiting Room Parents Program of UMDNJ: is a Newark native who has successfully defeated prevailing stereotypes that African American males from urban environments cannot succeed.

Having been raised in poverty by a single mother in a tough neighborhood, Denard knows first-hand the daily challenges and temptations that face young black males(i.e. sub-standard education, gangs, violence, drugs and the pervasive ignorance that seems to saturate the minds of misguided youth city-wide). Denard frequently talks with teens as a businessman who has successfully avoided the traps that seem to capture impressionable youth.

In an environment where going to jail is seen as a badge of honor and misogynistic barbaric behavior toward fellow sisters and brothers seem to be encouraged, Denard serves as the anti-thesis to such views with hope that he can inspire at least one young man to consider an alternative path. “Young black men aren’t just athletes, entertainers or statistics that fill the overcrowded prisons; we are doctors, lawyers, business owners, investors and yes even presidents”, says Mr. Coleman.

Denard J Coleman holds a Bachelors in Finance from Rider University with a concentration in Entrepreneurial Studies and holds numerous state licenses related to financial services. Upon graduation in 2002, Denard, having been offered numerous corporate opportunities worked as an Internal Auditor for Commerce(now TD) Bank. Denard quickly climbed the corporate ladder from Staff Auditor to Chief AIC(Auditor in Charge) from 2002-2004. In 2004 Denard was hired as a consultant by state health department. Later that year Denard was brought on full-time to assist the UMDNJ non-profit called the Brotherhood Health Health Initiative as Financial Consultant and Case Manager.

Passionate about giving back, Mr. Coleman always had the desire to help dis-advantaged youth navigate urban traps by sharing his knowledge and seeking opportunities to learn more about the at-risk population.

While working with the Brotherhood Health Initiative Mr. Coleman worked part-time as a Family Social Worker for Kid Connection, a subsidiary of Family Intervention Services in South Orange, NJ from 2005 - 2008. In 2005 Denard created the Adolescent Youth Development/Waiting Room Parents program. As Program Director, Mr. Coleman has secured annual grant funding to date.

Both programs are designed to strengthen families via working with at-risk male youth and their parents respectively via individual/group counseling and referrals to relevant services. The premise of each program is that the success or failure of any child is heavily determined by the strength of the family.

With the understanding that the ability to attract and manage funds plays a significant role in the success or failure of non-profit organizations, Mr. Coleman has decided to pursue his MBA at Columbia University next year.
