Students learn and practice all skills listed below that are required for quarter one. There is a major emphasis on patient assessment and sterile technique as these are vital stepping stones each student must master before progressing in this program.Textbooks:DeWit, Susan C (2018). Fundamental Concepts and Skills for Nursing 5th edition: Elsevier.ATI Academy BooksReferences:ATI Learning Academy: Skills TutorialsCourse Objectives: At the successful conclusion of the course the student will be able to:Demonstrate proper basic head to toe assessment including proper stethoscope placement for respiratory assessment, cardiovascular assessment, and abdominal assessment.Demonstrate proper sterile gloves, sterile field, sterile technique, and sterile dressing change.Demonstrate proper moist to dry dressing change using clean technique.Demonstrate proper blood glucose monitoring.Demonstrate proper insertion and removal of an indwelling catheter.Demonstrate/discuss proper suture and staple removal.Demonstrate/discuss proper management of drains. In order to achieve a passing grade, the student must participate in scheduled lab days. There are two attempts to pass a skill, if a student does not pass on the second attempt, they must remediate the skill. If after remediation a student does not pass the check-off, a grade of Fail will be given and the student will be dismissed from the program.Arrangements must be made with the Clinical/Skills Lab Coordinator for sessions that are missed. Make-up sessions should be the next classroom day. Apple points will be deducted for failure to meet classroom requirements including but not limited to being absent, tardy or unprepared such as not having a post-test or skills packet, leaving the premises without permission or being disruptive.
