Assistant Administrator for Energy Statistics

Duties

Stephen Harvey is the Assistant Administrator (AA) for Energy Statistics and is responsible for a wide range of survey, statistical methods, and integration activities related to: energy consumption and efficiency; electricity; nuclear and renewable energy; oil, gas and coal supply; and petroleum and biofuels. The AA for Energy Statistics also manages the EIA data collection program and the quality control for weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual and quadrennial statistical reports.

Biography

Steve has been a career member of the Senior Executive Service (SES) since 2002 with experience in high-profile public management, public sector operations, and consulting relating to electric and natural gas markets, regulation and enforcement as well as expertise in executive-level leadership and technological innovation. Most recently, Steve served as the Director of the Office of Oil and Gas.

In 1983, Steve began his career in the energy industry as an analyst at the Interstate Natural Gas Association. He then worked at the Enron Corporation, rising to the position of Vice President, Physical Risk Management in Enron's energy trading business. In 1993, Steve was named President at NJR Energy.

From 1997 to 2001, he served as Senior Vice President at Columbia Energy Services. In 2001, Steve joined Exolink Corporation as Vice President, Operations where he successfully managed the operations and development efforts of an energy-related information technology startup company that handled customer service and accounting transactions between energy marketers and multiple state retail electric and natural gas markets.

In 2002, Steve joined the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) as its Director of Energy Market Oversight, where he spent five years managing FERC's natural gas and electricity market monitoring and analysis efforts.

Steve earned a B.S. in physics and political science from Guilford College, and an M.P.P. from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.
