The task your wisdom has assigned here let me cheerfully fulfil; in all my work your presence find, and prove your good and perfect will. You may I set at my right hand, whose eyes my inmost secrets view, and labour on at your command and offer all my work to you. Help me to bear your easy yoke, in ev'ry moment watch and pray, and still to things eternal look and hasten to that glorious day. Then with delight may I employ all that your bounteous grace has given, and run my earthly course with joy,and closely walk with you in heaven.Charles WesleyThe Gospel Matthew : chapter 21 vv 23-32The Authority of Jesus Questioned23?Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?”24?Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 25?John’s baptism—where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?”They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 26?But if we say, ‘Of human origin’—we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.”27?So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”Then he said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. The Parable of the Two Sons28?“What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’29?“‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.30?“Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.31?“Which of the two did what his father wanted?”“The first,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32?For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.WordPrayersGenerous, hospitable Lord, who turns no one away, welcome each one of us now, in this time of worship and gathering and embrace us in your being.ConfessionWe sometimes think that the more we have the happier we will be. ‘If only’, then all will be well.We sometimes turn the other way, closing our eyes and ears, ignoring what we see, choosing to neglect those asking for help.We sometimes refuse a helping hand to those in need – we want to do ‘our thing’ instead. We do not want to confess these things but, Lord, in this moment, in this place, in this space that we’ve been given, give us the desire to confess our failings and our sins, renew us from within and set us free from all that shackles us. Set us free to be the human beings you would have us be. ThanksgivingLord, in this place that is so important to us, where we meet you and each other, we give thanks for your servants who have so loyally led us this far and carried the work of leadership and service in the roles they have undertaken on our behalf. We honour them that through their leadership this place has welcomed and supported us, and is our spiritual home.CallingAs we leave this service of worship today, may we each go with a question in our minds as to how we can help take up the work they have done. Speak to us Lord, and help us to find our place in your future here. Amen. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.
