Content Objective(s):
After class demonstrations and lecture the students will be able to identify the elements of a story, reflect on the story through mapping to make a prediction, draw a conclusion through analyzing the elements of the story and summarize the events in a story mapping worksheet and a story box activity.

Modifications: The students have been allowed to pick their own book over the pilgrim’s journey to America. This allows each student to select a book at their reading level.

Anticipatory Set:
When we read a book what are some of the elements that we need to know to understand what the story is telling us? Give wait time for student involvement. What is a character? What is a setting? What are the situations (problems)? What is the major event that takes place? What is the conclusion? Randomly select a few students and ask what books they read and ask a couple of these questions to them. As we can see even though we all have the same topic our information can still be different from each other.
Instructional Input:
Today we are focusing on filling out our story map worksheet then we are going to transfer this information to a story box instead of writing a book report. What are the elements of a story? Very good answer!

Nice job, do we have to list all the characters? That is correct; no we only need the main characters. Who can tell me what their story is about? Nice, can anyone tell me the elements that she just mentioned? Exactly right the first 5. What I would like to do is hand out the worksheet and this blank piece of paper. Go ahead and turn the work sheet over and write your prediction of how your book will end.
Modeling/Demonstrating:
Since we all have different books that we are reading I want you to turn in your books to page 251. I will demonstrate with the Did You Know article titled A Rough Sea. The first thing I’m going to write down is the title A Rough Sea. I want you to follow along as I read. As I come to an element I will pause and ask what this information tells me and then write it down. My setting is in the Atlantic Ocean. My character is Captain Christopher Jones. Was there any problems? Yes bad storms, lack of food, death and low tides. What could we call a major event? I will use the bad storms. Do we know the conclusion? Yes they landed at Provincetown Harbor near Cape Cod.
Let’s take that blank sheet of paper and across the narrow side near the top draw 3 boxes about 3 inches square. Label them 3, 2, and 4 under the boxes. Then draw a box above the number 2 box, label it 1 and 2 boxes below the number 2 box with labels 5 and 6. On the map we use short descriptive word to recall by, when we transfer the information we want to use more informative information.
Guided Practice:
Let get the worksheet and begin working on the information that we know at this point. Select a student from my Popsicle sticks. Johnny tell me about your story? Okay, what was the title? After each question I will pick another name from a cup. Okay good, what was the setting? Very good, now let’s complete the information on the worksheet.
Checking for Understanding:
The questions that I ask in the guided practice will give me the information I need to know if they are ready to finish on their own. If there is a couple that is border line I will go to them and work with them one on one to help them understand.
Independent Practice:
Students will complete the worksheet then transfer the brief descriptive information over to a more elaborate description of the elements on the story box activity.
Closure:
What are the elements of a story? Does the closure come first? Do they have to happen in order or can they vary? Good, what is the first thing we write down after our name? Right the title. Now that we have done a story box do we want to go back to the book report format next time? That’s what I thought okay we will continue using story boxes.
Evaluation/Assessment:
I will view the worksheet and the story boxes that the students complete, using the rubric to measure by.
