Repeated Readings

Strategy: Repeated Readings

Appropriate Grade Level: 2-8

Procedures/Steps:

Select appropriate reading rate goals for each student.

Select reading selections at appropriate reading levels for each student and give a few for the student to pick from so they can

choose an interesting one for them.

Student either reads the selection for either predetermined minutes or times.

The student is allowed to ask questions and work with a partner (teacher/friend).

After practicing the selection, the student reads it as fast as possible while being timed.

Determine method to calculate reading rate by using precounted passages or use a specific number of minutes each time.

Teach students how to record and chart progress.

Comments and/or tips:

Fluency rates increase and deeper comprehension is gained through repeated readings, but studies indicated that depending on the

grade level, the number of re-readings varied. In general, fluency increased upon reading a passage seven times, and comprehension

is improved after three.
