Analysis of Beat ‘em up GamesThrough the completion of this task I will develop my understanding of the core aspects and design methods of the ‘beat ‘em up’ genre of games, such that detailed context is brought to the work I am currently undertaking with my ‘Street Fighter’ character design project.Beat ‘em up games, a genre of video-game in which multiple or a single player faces off in hand to hand combat against a seemingly endless horde of enemies of various descriptions, has been a distinctly prominent and popular style of video-game that has been around for decades. These games feature a typical combo based control scheme with such mechanics as lives and pick-ups typically implemented in some way or another. In addition to this, this genre of video-game typically utilise revenge based plot lines, with the player character fighting through hordes of enemies in order to avenge someone or defeated the main quarry. Moreover, these games are typically presented in a side-scrolling format in which areas are transitioned to each other by reaching the other side of the screen; while newer additions to the genre more typically utilise a 3D environment in order to allow the player more freedom of movement and prevent such games looking too dated.left4191000Originally releasing in 1991 on the SEGA Genesis and Master System platforms and later releasing on such platforms as the Wii and iOS, Streets of Rage was one of the most popular and celebrated beat ‘em games to be released during the pixel based side scrolling formats prominence. Streets of Rage presents a typical array of characters for its time, with the main protagonist Axel Stone being a white muscular bareknuckle fighter seeking to defeat the evil mastermind Mr. X.251206035179000 CITATION GAM17 \l 2057 (GAMESPOT, 2017) CITATION Ele17 \l 2057 (Electronics Boutique Australia Pty Ltd., 2017)Originally releasing in 2009 on the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, Batman: Arkham Asylum presents a distinct example of a successful modern beat ‘em up video-game, selling approximately two-million units in the first three weeks of release. This game featured a large 3D environment with multiple paths to the player character’s objective, thus, allowing for player choice to engage them more effectively. In addition to this, the game ca be seen to be the main presentation of what has since become almost an industry standard control/ combat style for this genre of video-game. Moreover, the storyline of the game, due to the nature of the source material used to develop this game, is a clear example of a more complex form of character and story development.
