Snapping the Stiletto: Essex Women’s History Festival, Saturday 9th March 2019, University of Essex Business School, Wivenhoe, FREECall for ContentSnapping the Stiletto is a county-wide project looking at how local women’s lives have changed in the century since getting the vote, and uncovering stories of inspirational Essex women. It is a partnership between 11 local museums and Essex County Council, funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Collections Fund. This FREE festival, run in partnership with the University of Essex, will celebrate strong Essex women. It will highlight stories of past and present women making a difference in their local communities. Our themes are campaigning women, women at work, and migrant women, and we are focused on the hundred years following the Representation of the People Act 1918. We aim to reach 250 attendees.Snapping the Stiletto is a community-led project and we are keen to involve as many people as possible in the festival. We are looking for:20 minute presentations on individuals or groups of Essex women8 minute “lightning” presentations “Craftivism” art or craft activities Introductory digital “maker” demonstrations FilmsDisplay stands/exhibits for relevant organisations Other – if you have an exciting idea that’s not included above, we still want to hear from youDefinitions:The project aims to be as inclusive as possible. We are defining “Essex women” as anyone who self-identifies as female and was born, or spent a significant part of their lives, within historic Essex, including Southend-on-Sea, Thurrock and those areas which are now part of London.“Campaigning women” can be focussed on any issue, such as animal rights, children’s rights, equality, freedom of speech, period poverty, LGBTQIA rights etc. Although the time period we’re looking at starts with the Representation of the People Act, we are still interested in including presentations about Suffragettes. We would welcome proposals about their continued campaigning until the second Act in 1928 or their lives after the suffrage movement achieved its aims. “Women at work” covers any industry or form of work. It includes the experiences of the many or of those few who were working in “men’s jobs”. It also includes artists, writers, inventors and musicians.“Migrant women” covers anyone who has moved to Essex from elsewhere in the world and their experiences of life in the county, how it affected them and their contribution to local life.We would love to hear about strong Essex women from throughout the last hundred years, right up to 2018, so if you think you have an interesting story to tell, please get in touch. You are welcome to submit a proposal either as an individual, as part of a group or on behalf of an organisation.
