Coaching Staff: Head Coach: Kyla Menefee Asst. Coaches: Amanda Wilds and Kristen RarmiezPhilosophy: Players, parents, and coaches are all essential parts of this program. We all want the same thing, success for the program and for the players. In order for this to happen, we must remember our roles: Parents parent; coaches coach; and players play. Remember that everything is not equal, but know that we will try to make things fair for every player. Every situation is different and needs to be treated that way. Mission Statement: 1. To teach life lessons through volleyball 2. To develop caring community supporters and leaders 3. To develop personal growth 4. To develop volleyball skills 5. To develop respect of self, coach, and everyone around 6. To develop organizational skills and responsibility 7. To improve communication skills with coaches and teammates 8. To develop "team" concepts to achieve goals Student-Athlete Expectations: Reference Student Parent Handbook Parent Expectations: Reference Pre-Season Evaluation Letter Ferris High School Volleyball Handbook 2020 Playing Time: Refer to Pre-Season Evaluation Letter ● There will be cuts made to the program if the coaches feel that a certain student-athlete has no room for improvement during the season. This is a high school program and not every athlete is promised a position to play. However, the next season the student-athlete may come out and try out again. Player Movement: Player movement can occur at any time during the season. A player can earn the right to be moved up to a different level and a player can earn the right to be moved down. Player movement is based upon the needs of each team and the coaching staff's decisions. A player can never become satisfied and should always continue to improve. "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, you need a team.” - John Wooden FOR US TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN 2020 We want young women who care about the team and their teammates, not just themselves. In order for us to have success, players must be trustworthy, committed to the program, and care about their teammates. Leadership has to come from the returners and the seniors because they have the greatest experience and know what it takes to be successful. We expect that a freshman or sophomore will show tremendous respect for the upperclassmen, and upperclassmen will demonstrate by their actions the appropriate demeanor and effort of a student-athlete. This season, as in any season, it is important that no one can think she is above the team. Anytime a group of people are NOT concerned about individual accomplishments, the group has an opportunity to be successful. We all need to know our roles for the team to win. Teamwork is nothing more than everybody being committed to each other's success. It does not matter if you are a starter or a role player; you need to find some way to contribute! We expect you to do what is right! What you are capable of doing is determined by your talent. What you actually do is determined by your attitude. Attitude is everything. I can. I will. I am. Students and athletes succeed not because of talent alone, but because of their work habits, their attitude, their intelligence, and their values. **Classroom Behavior o Athletes represent the volleyball program in the classroom as well. We expect athletes to treat teachers and staff with respect at all times. o If a player misbehaves in the classroom in any way or disrespects an adult that the player will have consequences determined by the coach. All alternative punishments such as ISS or AEP will be treated the same. **Accountability Folders are turned in every Thursday Meals: ● If we leave the school before 7 AM and return after 10 AM, WE WILL FEED PLAYERS. ● If we leave the school before 11 AM and return after 2 PM, WE WILL FEED PLAYERS. ● If we leave the school before 4 PM and return after 7 PM, WE WILL FEED PLAYERS. Outside the Gym or School behavior: ● All athletes need to be accountable for their actions outside of school such as: ? Social Media ? Dress (Spandex should not be worn around campus unless in the gym) ? Keep all athletic related discussions or issues inside of athletics Practices/Class Period - Required at all times ? Injured players must still attend all team functions including practice, and still have work to do. - Excused vs. Unexcused absences o Any unexcused absence the day before a game will result in a suspension o Excused absences: doctor, illness, family emergency, etc. ? Not punished, but still have make-up work to do that was missed (Just like in regular classes) ? Put a limit on doctor visits; after certain amounts can become unexcused at coaching staffs discretion. o Unexcused absences: skipping, haircut, driver’s license, birthday party, tutorials without approval, etc. ? 1st – disciplinary action determined by coach - Halo (5 laps around gym with 25 lb weight above head) ? 2nd – suspension and disciplinary action – Halo and 5 Towel Pushes ? 3rd – removal from program **All makeup work must be complete before participating in the next game. Do not expect to miss the day before a game and play if it is unexcused. If a student athlete misses morning practice and comes to the athletic period, they will jump in but are still required to make up what was missed on own time. Clothes/Equipment As a select member of the volleyball program, you set yourself apart from the rest of the student body. Because you are asked to do certain things for the team, you become different, special and must be willing to take on additional responsibilities to represent yourself and your teammates: 1. No jewelry at practice or matches unless appropriate for your religion 2. Matching practice shirt and short must be worn daily to practice 3. All clothes are to be turned in each day for washing 4. Not having clothes will result in an unexcused absent 5. Wearing clothes off campus or around school is just like stealing 6. Wearing someone else’s clothes is stealing as well 7. Losing clothes will result in removal from the Athletic Program 8. Locks are required on lockers (We will provide them) 9. Hair must be in a ponytail at all times during practice You should be willing to sacrifice because you are a Ferris volleyball player. We want to have a great volleyball team and a season filled with fantastic moments. We cannot do that if we have to worry about individual performances or preferences. If you need to call attention to yourself, do it with your hustle, effort, and performance, not by how you dress, negative actions, or bad behavior. We have to put all of that aside and think this is all part of being proud to be part of a TEAM! Take pride in being a part of the program; be loyal to the program and maintain a high level of discipline. Now it is my time in history. I vow that before I leave, history will remember me as a champion both on and off the field of play. ● There will be cuts made to the program if the coaches feel that a certain student-athlete has no room for improvement during the season.
