Ferris Lady Jacket Softball Parent and Player Handbook“Communication, Attitude, Energy and Effort”Head Coach: Stephen HoltonAssistant Coaches: Shannon Lane, Kristen RamirezPlaying Time: Ferris’ coaching staff is responsible for the composition of the team and determining playing time. Playing time cannot and will not be guaranteed to any player. The coaching staff will make that decision based on a player’s grades, attendance at practices, player performance during practice, the importance of the game, attitude and most of all the team’s needs and the player’s capabilities at or during that specific game.Player Movement:Player movement can occur at any time during the season. A player can earn the right to be moved up to a different level and a player can earn the right to be moved down. Player movement is based upon the needs of each team and the coaching staff decisions. A player can never become satisfied and should always continue to improve. The success of the team will be determined by these factors:A great attitude and great sportsmanshipBuying in fullyBeing coachable is the keyTeam first mentality - ask yourself - are my words/actions going to help the teamUnderstanding what we can control and what we cannot controlAs a member of the softball program you represent the team and the school. You will be held to a higher standard than other students. I am not just getting the athletes ready for softball, I am getting them ready for life. Now is the time to leave the imprint you want to leave, because tomorrow will be too late.Classroom and field behavior:Student athletes represent not only themselves in the classroom, but the team. Student athletes will treat administration, teachers and substitute teachers with respect at all times. Failure to do so will result in negative consequences administered by the coaching staff as they deem necessary. When being addressed by coaching staff or umpire, remove sunglasses and make eye contact.A player will not engage in conflict with umpires. Coaches will handle disputes. Grades:Grades are taken very seriously in the program. Any grades that fall below a B average will result in a conference between the teacher of the class, myself and the student athlete. Meals:If we leave the school before 7 AM and return after 10 AM, WE WILL FEED PLAYERS.If we leave the school before 11 AM and return after 2 PM, WE WILL FEED PLAYERS.If we leave the school before 4 PM and return after 7 PM, WE WILL FEED PLAYERS.Players will only be fed by the school one time each day. Outside the Gym or School behavior: All athletes need to be and will be accountable for their actions outside of school such as:Social MediaDressAll athletic related discussions or issues inside of athleticsPractices/Class Period:Required at all timesInjured players must attend all team functions including practice, games, etc. Do not just go to the trainer during practice times without permission.Excused vs. Unexcused absencesAny unexcused absence that results in a student athlete missing a practice will lead to the student athlete missing a game.Excused absences = doctor, illness, family emergency.Must be accompanied by documentationWill not result in missing a game. However, will be required to make up in the form of conditioning and additional reps. An abuse of excused absences could result to being treated as unexcused. A player missing practice hurts their individual growth and the growth of the team.Excused absences - other school/UIL eventsPlayer must notify the head coach via email of an upcoming school absence. Please do not just tell them during practice. Do not depend on the teacher/sponsor to notify the coaches.Player must give notification as soon as the absence has been scheduledWill not result in missing a game. However, will be required to complete make ups in the form of conditioning and additional reps.Unexcused absences: skipping, haircut, driver’s license, birthday party, tutorials without approval, any absences not accompanied by documentation. Missing one practice will result in missing one gameFor every minute late= 1 foul poleA student athlete that finds themselves continuously late or missing practice will result in removal from the program. **All makeup work must be complete before participating in the next game.**If a student athlete misses morning workouts with documentation they are allowed to participate in afternoon practice as scheduled. You will be left behind and it will be considered an unexcused absence.Players will be responsible for their own equipment and team equipment getting on, off and back on the bus.In the event that the player will not be returning home on the bus with the team, proper paperwork must be filled out prior. We ask for a week in advance to allow for adjustments in food preparation. Facilities:Keep the locker room clean!!!! This is your one warning.Clean your issued locker once a week. Personal items go home (school clothes, snack items)If it smells bad - clean it or dispose of it (shoes, food)Daily responsibilities will be issued to maintain the softball field. This is our home. Treat as such. Make it a place you are proud for visitors to seeKeep dugouts, bullpens, storage facilities and batting cages clean!Keep all non softball talk off the field. Let the field be your escape from reality. Parents:Parents are supposed to be the role models for their children and that is what we would like to see from all parents. We understand that you are looking out for the best interest of your child, but we also want you to understand that we are looking out for the best interest of our athletes and the team as a whole unit. Softball is very much a mental game as well as athletic and we feel it is very important to create a positive atmosphere at games in order to draw the best out of our coaches and players. We expect our parents to act in a calm manner at all games. If a situation arises that does not represent our team, or our school in a favorable manner, you may be asked to leave the stands for the remainder of the game. Negative comments will not be tolerated and will result in immediate removal from the stands. There should be absolutely ONLY positive comments heard publicly.Coaching from the stands:While we appreciate all of the time and effort you as parents put into your daughters, once you arrive at a game, coaching should only be done by the Ferris High School coaches. Players will not leave the dugout during games. We do not need players looking into the stands from the field during games for advice or approval. Practices are closed to the public.Coaches coach, Parents cheer!Home games:It is strongly encouraged that the junior varsity stay for the entire varsity game. They are required to stay through 3 innings. When leaving you are to sign out with one of the coaches or managers. All coaches are involved in assisting the varsity game. They can not be interrupted during the game to signout a player. Players will not be signed out to anyone other than the parent/guardian. Signing out for another teammate will result in removal from the program. All JV players will be accompanied by a coach to change and turn in game clothing. This will be done as a group. There will not be a coach available to take a player in the middle of a varsity game to change. Keys will never be given to a player to go change clothes. All games:Fan and player communication will be limited to emergencies only. This is best for the player and team. Not only does this make my job more difficult when there are outside distractions, it also puts the players in danger when they are not paying attention to what is happening on the field. Breaking this expectations will result in the fan being removed from the facility from administration that is in attendance. All food and beverages that are brought to the player before games will be placed in a cooler outside the dugout. A team manager will retrieve the cooler before the game to hand to players.Post game: Players will be released to speak to fans after the game by the coach. Until that time please hold off from interacting with the players.Simply put: You would not like someone coming into your workplace during the day and interfering with you livelihood. I respectfully ask for the same in munication:Ferris Athletics encourages open communication between Coaches, Players and Parents. If a situation occurs that a player or a parent does not agree with or understand, such as playing time, role on the team, or any other situations, then first the player will need to discuss the matter with the head coach. The player would need to set up a time for these discussions apart from practices and games. Coaches will not be confronted in a public area, or in front of other parents and players. Please, never approach a coach in anger. We will listen to your comments, but in the end we will make decisions based on what we believe is best for both the team and the players. Let 24 hours go by before requesting a meeting. Parent/coach meetings will not happen before player/coach meeting and not before 24 hour window, excluding weekends.During a Parent/Player/Coach meeting, playing time will not be discussed and no other players on the team will be discussed. We are trying to prepare these players for college and beyond, therefore, we would appreciate players trying to handle their own problems, and if they are not successful, only then the parents should intervene. Please read over the packet. Legal guardian and player are to sign and return back to me before the next practice.PRINT NAME______________________________SIGNATURE_____________________Date__________ Parent / GuardianPRINT NAME______________________________SIGNATURE_____________________Date__________ Player ................
