Hubble’s Universe

Teacher notes

The student notes introduce two levels in which our appreciation of the scale of the Universe has enlarged. The geocentric/heliocentric revolution is examined in the ‘Are those Suns or Stars’ lesson materials.

The aim of ‘Hubble’s Universe’ is to understand the levels of structure of space – solar system, galaxy, Universe. The spreadsheet exercise allows students to discover this structure in a graphical form.

Students can find more examples of objects on the European Space Agency (ESA) Hubble site

The idea of a creating a holiday brochure allows students to be creative with the ideas. The images on the information and image library sheet are quite detailed and can be cut, pasted and resized into their brochures along with the distance charts they have created.

Launched in 1990, the Hubble space Telescope is a Joint NASA/ESA project. 15% of the funding came from ESA but European astronomers have enjoyed up to 25% of the telescopes observing time, the highest proportion (28%) of that time being taken by UK scientists.
