Extension to Google Chrome:Open Google Chrome (multi-colored circle icon)Click on the 3 vertical dots in the top right corner of the screenSelect “More Tools” from the dropdown menuThen select “Extensions” from the next menu that opensScroll down and click on “Get more extensions”Search for “Speak It” (it should come up with multiple options – the one you want has a little faceless person icon with a yellow speech bubble beside its head)Click the blue “Add to Chrome” buttonAfter it installs, you should have a new icon along the top bar of the Chrome browser (the same little faceless person with the speech bubble). If you click on that icon, you can change the Speak It settings (for English Learners or students with reading difficulties, you’ll probably want to change the rate to Slowest).Directions to Use Speak It!:Navigate to a website your student needs to hear read aloud for general classroom activities and assignments (not testing).Place the cursor before the beginning of the passage they need to hear and click and hold. Drag the selected text to the end of the passage needed to be heard. (For struggling readers, it would be helpful to teach them to only select one paragraph at a time rather than a large amount of text.)When the text is highlighted, right-click on the selection and choose “Speak It” and it will begin reading aloud. **You will likely want to provide headphones for students who will benefit from this read-aloud capability to lessen distractions. ................
