The Bernedoodle is a wonderful combination of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Standard Poodle. The Bernese is one of the best companion dogs in the world. They are sweet, loving and loyal to a fault. After raising Bernese Mountain dogs for years and having owned them for over 25 years I can safely say that there is something special that grabs your heart and holds on forever. It took me a long time to decide to do the Doodles. My Veterinarian was actually very key in the decision. Most folks breed because of the low to no shed coat, that being an obvious benefit. The health benefits were what drew me to further investigate the cross. The Bernese is not a long living dog, having a Bernese past 9 is a blessing. Although we have breed our lines for longevity it is still heartbreaking to lose a dog so young. The Standard poodle lends much more to the combination than just a coat and health though. The Standard Poodle is a very fun loving dog! They eat up attention in a different way than the Bernese. They are more subtle at the approach, but make no mistake they are an amazing breed! What do most people not know about Bernedoodles that would surprise them? Bernedoodles love to be the center of attention! They will put on a show for anyone that will watch. The fun thing about Bernedoodles is that no two are exactly alike in their looks. From Day one they are very distinct in personality and in their appearance. What are some of the positives of owning a Bernedoodle? The obvious positives are a low to no shed coat, if first generation then a healthy vigor and they just make you smile! They are very easy to train and eager to learn. What are some of the negatives? It is important to know that you will need to do some grooming with the Bernedoodle. It is not the rigorous grooming required for the Standard Poodle but there is grooming involved. Puppy cuts are an option which is nice for the summer months! What is the advice that any person NEEDS to know before they get a Bernedoodle? It is important before anyone adopts a dog that they think the decision over very carefully. It is a lifelong commitment and not a decision to be made lightly. I do provide a safety net for puppy parents and dogs are always welcome back at the ranch no questions asked. However, it is so important to do your homework on the breed and remember there are no stupid questions! All of our dogs are raised in our home. We are not a kennel! For me it is important that folks understand that these dogs are not a “backyard” dog. They crave and need human interaction. If you can not provide that then the Bernedoodle is not your breed. What would you consider to be the ideal home for a Bernedoodle? The ideal home is one with lots of love to give. It is always best if there is someone home with the pup, especially through the early stages. They love to get in the car and go as well! What is some advice for a new owner when selecting a puppy from a breeder? Get to know your Breeder. If you are not comfortable with where the pup comes from then you should listen to your gut and move on. I like to get to know my puppy parents. It is as important to me to know where the pup will live and what their life will be like. The relationship with the breeder should not end the day the pup goes home. It is my feeling that since I made the decision to breed that I am responsible for that life. It is a life after all and even though everyone wants guarantees, life does not always work that way. What are some of the biggest mistakes a new Bernedoodle owner makes during the first months? Love that question! There are no mistakes, just opportunities! Because the Bernedoodles are so cute, folks tend to spoil them. I always tell my folks not to let their pups go at life with their mouth wide open. That little pup will be a big dog soon. Nip the bad habits in the bud early on and you will have an amazing companion for life! Do you have any housetraining advice for a new Bernedoodle owner? The best advise I have is that as soon as the food goes in it is coming back out! As soon as they eat or drink take them out and give tons of praise. A key word like Potty seems to work very well. Do Bernedoodles get along well with other dogs? Why or why not? Bernedoodles have a very easy going nature. Typically any issue would arise with an older, jealous dog. Introduction should be slow and supervised at all times. What are some keys to training a Bernedoodle? Some common mistakes? I normally suggest puppy classes if at all possible. It is a great way to socialize the pup and makes training a very easy process. Do Bernedoodles have any specific diet needs, or differences from other breeds? I have not had any dietary concerns to speak of. It is common sense not to change a pups diet quickly. Try to stick with the food that the Breeder is feeding. If you must change, mix the food and do it very slowly. What kind of shedding should an owner expect? Any advice? The Shed is very low to no shed. I use Bernese Females that do not have the thick Bernese under coat. It has proven to reduce the shedding issue. The coat should be soft with slight curl, the breeder should tell you which coats are best if you need non shed for allergies. Can you speak to some of the genetic health concerns associated with Bernedoodles? If you look back at the health concerns for the Standard and the Bernese then you will know what could arise. However, there is a vigor in this cross that helps dilute those possibilities. I breed compatible bone structures in my dogs. So if you choose to go with Mini’s or F1B’s then you are increasing the risk for breeding back any inherent issues. Parents are tested and healthy but that is not always a guarantee. It is always good to take your pup to your own vet for a full health checkup the first week. It will give your vet a baseline and you peace of mind. All my folks have my Veterinarian’s number so that they can contact him directly or have their Vet call with any questions. ................
