Festivals, Live Entertainment & Exhibits Celebrate Latino Culture

PHILADELPHIA, June 28, 2017 – As a diverse and vibrant region that is the home to many Latino communities, Greater Philadelphia offers a wealth of Latino cultural events and festivals summer through fall. From the Delaware River Waterfront to Chester County, art exhibitions (Nuestro Tema: Llamada y Respuesta), musical performances (NuevoFest, Julieta Venegas, more), festivals (Hispanic Fiesta, Feria del Bario) and futbol (Club América vs. Club Puebla) honor the heritage and future of Latinos.

June:

• Nuestro Tema: Llamada y Respuesta (Our Theme: Call and Response) – The inaugural exhibition at the new El Corazón Cultural Center rotates the work of 24 artists from Philly to Rio over 16 months among gleaming new gallery halls. The concept of the showcase is to display works from and responding to the community itself. This summer, the Centro de Oro space features the work of Jack Delano, Lillian Mendez, Héctor Méndez Caratini and Tony Rocco. • Friday Nights at the Museum – The Philadelphia Museum of Art fetes the end of the week with live entertainment among the masterpieces. This time, the band is Los Angeles-based Buyepongo, playing a get-up-and-dance fusion of hip-hop, punk, funk and jazz blended into a Latino mix. • Club América vs. Club Puebla – Two Mexican soccer club greats—from Mexico City and Puebla, respectively—square off at Talen Energy Stadium, home of the Philadelphia Union. • Hispanic Fiesta – This weekend-long celebration, attended by over 15,000 people, fills the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing with music and dancing—salsa, merengue, bachata, samba, cumbia, mariachi and flamenco—Latino foods and artisan crafts from a wealth of Latin American countries. Sabrosito Rico Tour – The ever joyful Betsayda Machado Y La Parranda El Clavo makes a rare stateside appearance, leaving their small Venezuelan village on a highly-anticipated North American tour, making their way to the City of Brotherly Love.
