Statewide University Programs

Governor’s School of NC: a five and one-half week summer residential program for intellectually gifted high school students, integrating academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses on each of two campuses. The curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline, and does not involve credit, tests, or grades. The program, which is open to rising seniors only, with exceptions made for rising juniors in selected performing/visual arts areas, is located on two campuses of up to 325 students each: Governor's School West at Salem College in Winston-Salem (begun in 1963), and Governor's School East at Meredith College in Raleigh (begun in 1978). The program is administered by the Public Schools of North Carolina, the State Board of Education, and the Department of Public Instruction through the Exceptional Children Division. A Board of Governors, appointed by the State Board of Education, acts as an advisory body.

NCSSM Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics: SVSM is a state-supported program of the UNC system for gifted and talented rising juniors and seniors. It is a COST FREE program where selected students live and study at one of three university campuses for four weeks. Program details and a link to the online application can be found at .

East Carolina University

Math and Science Education Network (MSEN) Pre-College Program: Designed to prepare students to pursue math and science at the university level and beyond, including enrichment/preparation classes, Saturday and summer scholar programs, and competitions; no fee for Saturdays and one week summer program. unc.edu/depts/msen

Elon University

Elon Leadership Camp: To provide an engaging summer learning experience centered on the development of leadership skills for rising 4th and 5th grade students enrolled in a Title I elementary school in the Alamance-Burlington School System. Supervised by Elon University M.Ed. candidates in the field of Elementary Education, the eight-day camp allows for upper elementary students to learn the characteristics of a good leader, helpful ways to communicate, how to problem solve with others, and how they are developing as leaders.



FLEX Program: A Formative Learning Experience: To provide a summer learning opportunity for academically gifted students that allows them to investigate a topic of interest, make new friends, and challenge themselves intellectually under the supervision and guidance of Elon University M.Ed. candidates in the field of Gifted Education.  Students will be encouraged to explore their own unique skills and abilities through experiences designed to reinvigorate their enthusiasm for learning.

Meredith College

Lamar Stringfield Music Camp: Instruction includes classes in string orchestra training, string technique, chamber music, sectional rehearsing, theory; costs $350 for one week and $650 for two weeks.

Summer Math CAMMP (Comprehensively Applied Math Manipulatives Program): An opportunity for elementary school girls to focus on mathematics this summer. Open to rising first grade through rising fifth grade girls, Meredith’s Summer Math CAMMP will feature fun and educational hands-on activities that incorporate math, engineering, and technology.

Verano Latino: An opportunity for elementary students to receive Spanish language instruction through fun and engaging, hands-on lessons with a Spanish as a foreign language teacher. Open to rising first grade through fifth grade students, Verano Latino will develop enthusiasm for learning a new language and to cultivate cultural and global awareness. 

Young Writer’s Camp: Female students experience writing through hands-on activities, share and expand their curiosity and creativity during this five day camp.

North Carolina A & T State University

Aggie Enrichment Camps: The goal is to create an academic environment during the summer months that allows children to catch-up on the past year and prepare for upcoming year in a fun and positive learning environment.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Nature Explorers Summer Camp: Programs for ages 4-12 that offers hands-on science learning and exploring.

High School Music Camp: Offers master classes and private lessons for students in grades 9-12 to provide opportunities to work one-on-one with UNCCH faculty to study music theory and music literature; costs $325-$495 for one week program.

Project Uplift: An opportunity for high achieving students to increase racial, social, geographical, and economic diversity, this program targets the top 25% of high school students who are African American, Native American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian American, low income, rural students, or students from other historically underrepresented populations; nominal fee for 3-4 day conference.

University of North Carolina at Charlotte

UNC Charlotte Summer Camps: Offers a variety of programs that include engineering, science, art, math, robotics, reading, and more.

University of North Carolina at Greensboro

Summer Music Camp: Residential camp for band, orchestra, and piano students grouped by age and ability level.

All-Arts, Sciences and Technology Camp: A week long summer camp with day and residential options designed to give in-depth, hands-on instruction that includes recreation, citizenship, and entertainment (ages 7-15).

University of North Carolina at Pembroke

ENTREPRENEURSHIP INSTITUTE

'Money Talks' for Rising 11th and 12th Graders:

The UNC Pembroke Entrepreneurship Institute will help aspiring high schoolers learn the basics of going into business ---for themselves or just to think like a business-starter (a most useful skill in any job). The program will focus on activities designed to challenge participants to learn how to think ---and act --- like an entrepreneur.

JUNIOR BRAVES (Rising 4th through 8th graders)

UNC Pembroke offers rising 4th thru 8th graders the opportunity to join the Junior Braves program for a week of fun, creativity and problem solving. The Junior Braves program is designed to motivate and inspire young learners to explore and excel at challenging activities. 

College Bound: SAT Summer Institute (Rising 10th -12th graders): a pre-college preparation program at UNCP for high school students looking to prepare for the SAT. Students will spend the mornings on test preparation and the afternoon shifts taking part in dozens of other enrichment courses. In addition, students can learn how to apply for financial aid and scholarships, and gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed. Since it's a residential program, participants will also get to experience college life by staying in one of UNCP’s residence halls.
