Students and Parents:

It is time to register for the new 2013-2014 school year. Registration is scheduled for July 29-August 2 in the SHS cafeteria area. All returning students must register on one of the dates below even if they have already pre-registered in the spring. Registration dates and times are listed below.

Information in this newsletter includes rules, policies, and procedures, eligibility policy, staff extensions, cafeteria infor-

mation and scheduled dates for progress reports and Parent-Teacher conferences and a list of student fees is also provided as well as contact information for athletics. There will be no early registration. If students cannot register on one of these dates, they can register is the SHS office after August 1st. There will be very few class changes made at the beginning of the school year. Most classes are already at capacity and there is no room for movement. Elective changes will not be allowed unless it helps to balance a class. Students wishing to change their schedule will need to submit a schedule request form during registration. Students will be called if or when a change can occur.

Registration Procedures

PLEASE NOTE: SAFFORD HIGH SCHOOL ACCEPTS CASH, MONEY ORDERS, OR DEBIT AND CREDIT CARDS AS PAYMENT FOR FEES. CHECKS ARE NOT ACCEPTED.

Students will receive schedules at registration. Any changes in schedules will be done by counselors (see Counselor's Corner section on page 1).

Items Needed:

Proof of Arizona Residency. State law requires that proof of Arizona residency be provided for all students. Be prepared to show proof of Arizona residency during registration. If information has not changed from the previous year, a new form will not be required but proof still needs to be presented (driver's license, utility bill, etc). If there has been an address change, a new Arizona Residency form is required along with one of the items listed on the form. Forms can be downloaded from the SUSD website at and will also be available at registration.

Open Enrollment

Students planning on attending Safford High School who do not live in the Safford or Solomon school district must fill out an Open Enrollment application before registration. Applications can be picked up from the superintendent's office at 734 11th Street in Safford.

Seniors--Help Wanted

If you are a senior and would like to earn up to 25 of your servicelearning hours by helping out during registration, contact the SHS office at 348-7050, Ext 5701. Duties include passing out schedules, directing parents and students as they go through the registration process and assisting staff as needed.

Seniors may also volunteer to help on Tuesday, August 6th with the Freshman Experience from 10:0012:00 and also the New Student Experience from 1-2:30.

Locker Notice

Enrollment forms with last year's student information will be printed out at registration and a parent can make any necessary changes at that time.

Designation of Directory Information. Please read this enclosed form carefully. It is not Safford High School's policy to give out student personal information.

Payment of fees and/or fines. Please use the enclosed fee list form. Safford High School accepts cash, money orders, and debit or credit cards for payment. CHECKS ARE NOT ACCEPTED.

Locker rentals are $7. At the conclusion of each school year during a time of locker clearance students are expected to clean out their lockers and return their locks to the assigned teacher. Any student failing to check out at locker clearance time will be assessed a $5 locker cleaning fee.

Welcome Class of 2017

You are invited to the annual SHS event "The Freshman Experience" in the Center for the Arts on Tuesday, August 6th from 10:00-12:00. Information has been sent home to all 9th grade students. If you did not receive the information, you may pick up a flyer in the SHS office.

Lunch Ticket Information

Applications for free/reduced lunches will be available at registration and also in the high school office. Student ID cards are also used as lunch tickets. If a card is lost, a $5 fee will be charged for each additional card.

Attendance

If a student is absent, it is very important the SHS office receives a phone call on the day of the student's absence or by 7:00 a.m. the day following day. Parents can leave messages on the attendance line 24 hours a day at 348-7050, then press 1. Failure to call and excuse an absence may result in an Unexcused absence.

Off-Campus Passes

IMPORTANT--If a student needs to leave campus due to illness, appointment, or personal reasons, checking out through the office is mandatory. An Off Campus pass will be issued after the office receives a phone call or note from a parent. If a student does not follow these procedures, the absence will not be excused even if a parent calls at a later time to excuse the absence. The people you choose as your emergency contacts may also check a student out of school if a parent is not available.

Tax Credit Available

If your student participates in a sport at Safford High School, athletic fees may be applied as a tax credit to your 2013 State taxes. Please inform cashier when paying athletic fees if you choose to apply athletic fees towards a tax credit. In order to qualify for the tax credit, taxpayer name and address must be provided. Please Note: If you choose a tax credit, there will be no refunds issued if the student decides not to participate in a sport.

Yearbooks are the least expensive if purchased during the month of August. Yearbook prices begin at $75. From September through December the price of a yearbook will be $80 and will increase to $85 in January. A spring supplement will be included.

RESERVE SENIOR AD SPACE Families of the Class of 2014 you are encouraged to reserve your space for a 2013 recognition ad in the yearbook for your senior. Prices and a deadline will be announced.

Student Dress Code

Safford High School

Safford High School has a dress code which will be strictly enforced. It is important for the home and school to encourage desirable characteristics of student dress. Decency in attire is essential because our manner of dress tends to influence our attitudes and behavior.

The following student dress code is intended to serve the best interest and welfare of the student body, faculty, and community. Students will have parents called to bring appropriate clothing or taken home to change. If student can not get a change of clothing they will report to the Sweep Room for the day. Reminder: if they are in the Sweep Room, he/she will lose credit in the classes missed.

1. Shorts may not be shorter than 4 inches above the top of the knee cap. Spandex shorts are not allowed. No cut-offs or shorts with unhemmed/frayed edges are allowed.

2. Shirts, blouses, and tops should be modest and not expose a students' cleavage or breasts. Tops may not be cut below the breast line. The bust continues around your sides directly under the armpit with arms

down at your side. If flesh touches flesh below the breast line, the top is inappropriate. 3. All jersey's, dresses, skirts, shirts, blouses, or tops must have a 3inch shoulder seam and cover the ENTIRE midriff. Halters, backless, string ties, crop tops, low cut tops, and tank tops are not permissible. No large arm holes and/or gaping parts that expose the back and/or sides will be allowed unless an appropriate shirt that meets the dress code is worn underneath. Shirts with cut-off sleeves are appropriate for P.E. only. 4. Sheer/see-through blouses/ tops, fishnet, see through jerseys are not allowed, unless T-shirts with sleeves or tops with a 3-inch shoulder seam is worn underneath. 5. All undergarments and/or undershirts must be covered. 6. Skirts and/or dresses may not be shorter than 4 inches above the top of the knee cap. This includes slits in dresses and skirts. 7. Headgear or head coverings will not be allowed in school buildings. (Caps, hats, helmets, headbands, bandanas, hairnets, scarves, etc.) Except for Fridays only (caps/hats) can be worn but not in the class-

(No bare feet, socks without shoes, slippers, or wheeled shoes.) 13. Clothing or jewelry with questionable monograms or patches; i.e. beer, cigarettes, obscenities, sex, drugs, or gangs are not acceptable. USE OF TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES IN INSTRUCTION

ELECTRONIC INFORMATION SERVICES USER AGREEMENT

This user agreement shall be distributed to each potential user of the electronic information services (EIS). When an EIS agreement signature is returned to the school, either on this form or on the school registration form, the user may be permitted use of EIS resources.

Terms and Conditions

Acceptable use. Each user must: ? Use the EIS to support personal educational objectives consistent with the educational goals and objectives of the School District, during instructional time. During non-instructional time, EIS may be used as a community resource by any person who has signed the EIS user agreement and has permission to use the network. Use of ALL school equipment anywhere must comply with these guidelines at all times. ? Agree not to submit, publish, display, store or retrieve any defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, violent, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, racially offensive, or illegal material. ? Agree to keep passwords secure and never allow account to be used by others. ? Agree to use allotted EIS storage ONLY to store acceptable materials as outlined in this agreement and ONLY in areas designated for such storage. ? Abide by all copyright and trademark laws and regulations. ? Agree not to install or store on the network, software not licensed, owned, or approved by the District. ? Not attempt to harm, modify, add/or destroy software or hardware, nor interfere with system security. ? Not use the network in any way that would intentionally disrupt the use of the network by others, including streaming music or video for non-educational purposes. ? Not use EIS for campaigning or commercial purposes. ? Understand that electronic mail or direct electronic communication is not private and may be read and monitored by school employed persons. ? Follow the District's code of conduct. ? Understand that inappropriate use may result in suspension of permission to use the electronic information services (EIS) and appropriate disciplinary action up to and including expulsion for students.

In addition, acceptable use for District employees is extended to include requirements to: ? Monitor account activities when supervising others using District accounts. ? Take responsibility for assigned accounts, including password protection. ? Take all responsible precautions, including password maintenance and file protection measures, to prevent the use of accounts and files by unauthorized persons.

Personal Responsibility. I will report any misuse of the EIS to the administration or system administrator, as appropriate. I understand that many services and products are available for a fee and acknowledge my personal responsibility for any expenses incurred without District authorization.

I understand that it is impossible for the School District to restrict access to all controversial materials, and I will not hold the District responsible for materials acquired by use of the information services. I also agree to report any misuse of the information services to a School District administrator. Misuse may come in many forms but can be viewed as any messages or materials sent or received that indicate or suggest pornography, unethical or illegal solicitation, racism, sexism, inappropriate language, bullying or other issues described in the agreement. I accept full responsibility for supervision if, and when, my child's use of the information services is not in a school setting. I hereby give my permission to have my child use electronic information services.
