Independent samples t-tests

(Used to compare means of two different groups of scores when NO score in one group is paired with a score in the other group. This is the test used in having control groups.)

Step One:

Run Frequencies on the Split Groups

√ Highlight Group to be Split and Move Over

√ Compare Groups

√ OK

√ Statistics

√ Summarize

√ Frequencies

√ Move over the dependent (outcome) variable

√ Statistics

√ Mean

√ Standard Deviation

√ Continue

Note: Before you continue to another application you must complete the following:

√ Analyze all cases, do not create groups

Step Two:

Run Independent Samples t-test on Data

√ Statistic

√ Compare Means

√ Independent Samples t-test

√ Test Variable would be

√ Grouping Variable

√ Define Groups

√ Group One is No. 1 and Group Two is No. 2

Step Three:

Check for Statistical Significance

1. Go to the Independent Samples Test Box and look at the very third cell labeled Sig. (2-tailed) to check for significance.

2. If .000 add a 1 to check for significance at .05
