? The Bankhead Highway Visitors Center is housed in the home of the tallest soldier in the Civil War, Confederate Col. Henry Clay Thruston, who stood 7 feet, 7 ? inches tall. The restored antebellum home and adjacent 57-acre nature preserve sit beside the Bankhead Highway, America's first all-weather transcontinental highway and subject of a new Texas Historical Commission heritage tourism project: The Bankhead was the first all-weather transcontinental highway in the United States, and was designated State Highway 1 in 1917 by the Texas Highway Department. The number was later retired, and most of SH 1 was redesignated as U.S. Route 80, U.S. Route 287, Texas State Highway 16, and others ,and much was replaced by Interstate 10, Interstate 20, and Interstate 30.
