FIGURE TYPES

SOME CLOTHING TERMS

i. Clothing: this is anything you put on the body in order to protect, beautify or adorn it. Clothing includes dresses, accessories, hair do, make-up, hand bags, belts, shoes, etc.

ii. Clothes: They are the dresses or garment you put on e.g gowns, skirts, blouse, skirts, trousers, etc

iii. Accessories: These are the additional things we wear in order to supplement our clothes, e.g. shoes, hats, gloves, stockings, jewellery, cuff-links, ties, pins, hand-kerchief, scarves, etc

iv. Style: Style in dresses means the characteristics/distinctive outline or shape of the dresses

v. Figure : In clothing construction this means the body outline or shape of a person. No two persons are exactly alike

A style is Fashionable or in vogue at a given time if it is popular at that very time.

DIFFERENT FIGURE TYPES

There are different figure types and they are all based on Two measurements:

i. Height

ii. Nape to waist.

1. Girls: the figure is still developing because the bust is not yet defined. There is no need for under arm dart fitting in dress bodices.

2. Chubby: This figure type is for a growing girl who is over the average weight for her age and height.

3. Young/Junior/Teen: This is for adolescence or preteens or developing teens.

4. Junior petite: This is for short, well developed, but small body builds. This group has the shortest waist length when compared with other figure types.

5. Junior: This has a well developed figure that is slightly shorter than the misses.

6. Miss Petite: This has a well developed figure as misses but is shorter than misses.

7. Misses: This is well proportioned and well developed in all body areas. It is the tallest figure type.

8. Half size: This is a shorter figure. It is also fully developed. It has narrower shoulders than the Misses. It could have waist that is larger in proportion.

9. Woman: This is a fully matured figure.

THE MAIN FIGURE TYPES:

Body Shapes: Body shape is all about Proportion, and fashion is all about dressing those proportions to look their very best.

1. Pear body shape: examples of pear-shape celebrities: Kim Kardashian, Eva Mendes, And Jennifer Love-Hewitt etc.

Pear body Traits: The lower body is wider than the upper body-in other words, the hips are wider than your shoulders.

2. Wedge body shape which can also be called Inverted Triangle: wedge-shaped celebrities: Naomi Campbell, Demi Moore, Renee, Teri Hatcher etc.

Wedge body traits: This body shape features a broad chest and wide shoulders which are larger I proportion to a narrow waist and hip.

3. Rectangle body shape: Rectangle –shaped celebrities; Natalie Portman, Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson, Hilary Swank etc.

Body Traits: The waist, hip and shoulder widths are similar and are usually on the slim side. Slender figure has an athletic look about them.

4. Apple body shape: Apple-shaped celebrities-Drew Barrymore, Queen Latifah, Eva Longoria, Jennifer Hudson.

Apple body traits: Most of the weight accumulates above the hips, which are narrow. The back, ribs and shoulder are broad, and other types.

5. Hourglass body shape: hourglass body shaped celebrities: Beyonce, salma Hayek, Scarlett Johansson, Halle Berry, Vanessa Minnillo.

Hourglass body Traits: The shoulders and hips are similar in proportion and set off by a tiny waist.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Draw and label all figure Shapes as discussed above.
