Hi Ed

SPL – Centre for Local Governance announces a study opportunity, open to both practitioners and academics, to visit Brazil in the period directly after the Winelands Conference (as post-conference workshop) to explore their acknowledged global best practices in participatory budgeting and their responses to inequality, poverty and massive demands for services such as low-income housing (not to mention the experience of setting up a FIFA world cup event amidst all of this realities). The purpose of the Centre for Local Governance (CLG) is to focus exclusively on research, community interaction and training in matters relating to local government. One of the initiatives is also to provide opportunity for academics and practitioners to learn by means of comparative study. The visit is hosted by the Centre for Research and Documentation of Contemporary History of Brazil (CPDOC) of the School of Social Sciences at the Getulio Vargas Foundation. Criado em 1973, tem o objetivo de abrigar conjuntos documentais relevantes para a história recente do país, desenvolver pesquisas em sua área de atua??o e promover cursos de gradua??o e pós-gradua??o.We will also visit The Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul) in Porto Alegre. This is also very timely in the light of the current competency requirements for local government managers and the training and research on local government matters including the Municipal Minimum Competence Programme. With the above in mind, we wish to invite all interested SPL academics and senior practitioners to participate. We will limit the group to between 20 and 25, so please respond ASAP to book your place.Further details and provisional itinerary are available on the next page.Yours sincerelyProf AP Johan Burgerapjb@sun.ac.za Director: School of Public LeadershipDate: 5 – 13 April 2013Destination: BrazilPrice: R28?000 per personThis price includes international and domestic air travel, accommodation and breakfast, but excludes lunches, dinners and other day-to-day expenses5 AprilDepart Cape Town to S?o Paulo (3 nights)6 AprilSightseeing in City7 April Official visits8 April Depart to Rio de Janeiro (3 nights)8/9 AprilOfficial visits10 April: Sightseeing in City11 AprilDepart to Porto Alegre (2 nights)11/12 ?April ?
