Tests/Quizzes

Tests and quizzes will be cumulative, though with an emphasis on recent material. They may or may not be announced. Calculators may be used on tests/quizzes unless otherwise announced.

Classwork/Homework

Classwork includes all bell-ringers, notes, and examples done during class time. It is to be done in pencil on loose-leaf paper and kept in the “Classwork” section your binder. Each day must be clearly labeled with the date and objective.

Homework includes the assignments given for you to practice what you learned in class. It will be assigned and checked almost daily. Homework is also to be done in pencil on loose-leaf paper and kept in the “Homework” section in your binder. Each assignment must include your name, period, date, assignment number, topic’s number, page number, and the assigned exercises on the top of the page (right hand corner). Each assignment is worth 5 points. Homework will be graded/stamped/checked if it is completed on time and work is shown for each exercise. NO LATE WORK will be accepted. Credit for homework and classwork will be given by way of periodic checks.

ACT

Critical Thinking

Von Steuben will be working school-wide to improve critical thinking skills by using the Elements of Thought and Intellectual Standards (). We will be doing this by using M.S. 4.0 (Math Sector 4.0). Constructed responses and critical thinking exercises are more rigorous than average homework assignments and require a written explanation as part of your answer.

Class Participation

Attend class every day. Poor attendance has been linked to poor grades. A total of 50 points is awarded the first day of every quarter. Points will be deducted mainly for the following reasons: unexcused absences, cutting, tardiness, coming to class unprepared, and behaving inappropriately. Be an active participant in your learning. Engage in class discussions and group activities. Be attentive, on task and take notes. Try every problem of your homework each night and come to class each day prepared with any questions. Refrain from taking out of purses or pockets combs, mirrors, compacts, and any other personal items during class. Remain in your seat until the bell rings and teacher dismisses you.

Make Up Policy

Only students that have an excused absence will be allowed to make up homework, bell ringers, quizzes, and/or tests. If you are absent, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for showing me your homework on the day that you return. If you miss a test or a quiz YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE to talk with me on the day you return to make an appointment to make up the test/quiz. You have at most two days after your return. If you miss the appointment, you will receive a zero on the test/quiz. I also suggest that you exchange email/phone information with a classmate so that you can find out what you have missed. Tests/quizzes missed due to an unexcused absence will receive a score of zero.

Tutoring Hours

All students are advised to attend tutoring as needed. When you attend tutoring you must bring your notes and the assignment on which you need help. You may earn extra credit for attending tutoring as well as helping in tutoring. You may also earn extra credit for attending tutoring with another teacher.

General Classroom Expectations and Policies

In order to eliminate or minimize the number of interruptions and maximize the class instruction time, and in order to create an atmosphere of positive learning, the following guidelines have been established.

1) Must be quiet, seated, and prepared when bell rings. Two points will be deducted from quizzes for each tardy. (Bathroom, water fountain, pencil sharpening all must be done before the bell).

2) Must raise hand and be called upon before speaking or leaving seat.

3) No food, drink, gum or candy.

4) No electronic devices (cell phones, MP3 players, cameras, video games, etc.)

5) Students must be respectful to all and use only positive language.

Refer to your school discipline code handbook for proper classroom behavior and consequences.

Keep the desk, and the floor area around your desk free of debris.

Consequences

If any of the previous guidelines are not followed, you will be held responsible for your behavior, and the school discipline code will be strictly enforced. If you feel that you need to discuss any of the previously mentioned expectations, please talk to me in private. The following are some of the measures that I will take to resolve any conflict:

• Private meeting with student with a warning given.

• Phone conference with parent(s).

• Conference with parent(s) and/or dean.

• Detention/ Suspension.

• Removal from classroom.

• These consequences are subject to change.
